Direct Cash Transfer Project Marks Decade of Reducing Poverty in Rwanda

An assistance initiative has provided direct cash grants to hundreds of thousands of vulnerable households across Rwanda over the past decade, helping recipients invest in livestock, education, and housing.

A poverty-reduction initiative operating in Rwanda has marked its tenth anniversary, reporting that it has distributed more than 150 million dollars to over 250,000 households across 23 districts. During a commemorative event, recipients shared how the financial support enabled them to invest in livestock, pay school fees, purchase land, and acquire transportation.

The organization works in coordination with local government structures to identify eligible families based on national social stratification systems. Officials emphasized that the cash transfers empower individuals to address their specific household needs, while local authorities provide ongoing guidance to ensure the funds are utilized effectively for long-term development.

Research indicates that approximately 60 percent of the distributed funds have been directed toward investments such as land acquisition, livestock, and agricultural productivity. An additional 17 percent went toward housing improvements, 12 percent into savings, and 11 percent toward daily household needs. Organizers plan to continue their efforts in partnership with the government through an upcoming five-year phase aimed at reaching another 200,000 families.
