DeMeco Ryans Takes Defensive Play-Calling After Texans 0-4 Start

Head coach DeMeco Ryans is reclaiming defensive play-calling duties as the Texans search for their first win of the season.

The silence in the Texans’ locker room after an 0-4 start is a heavy burden. and for DeMeco Ryans. the only way to break it is to take the headset back. During his Wednesday press conference. the head coach announced he is assuming defensive play-calling duties immediately. a role he relinquished to defensive coordinator Matt Burke in September of last season.

The shift comes as the team grapples with defensive output that has fallen far from last year’s standard. While the Texans finished the previous campaign ranked No. 1 in scoring defense and No. 2 in yards allowed, the current squad sits at No. 20 in yards allowed and No. 26 in points allowed through the first four weeks of the season.

Communication lapses have emerged as the primary culprit for these struggles. Ryans. who held the play-calling role for the first two-plus years of his tenure. views the failure as an internal accountability issue. “It all starts with me. If there’s a lack in communication, I look at myself first,” Ryans said. “It starts with me and making sure I’m a better communicator. So just to help spark things more. I’m going to take over the play-calling for the defense and I’m going to make sure that communication is right. If our guys are saying communication is not right, then, ultimately, it falls on me. So, it’s on me to get it fixed.”.

The transition highlights a clear divergence between past success and current reality: the defensive structure that anchored last year’s performance has been unable to close out critical moments in the team’s four opening losses. While Ryans emphasized that Matt Burke has done an “outstanding job. ” he insisted that the change is necessary to streamline communication and prevent it from becoming a recurring post-game narrative.

Though Ryans labeled the shift a “tough decision,” he remained firm on his prerogative as head coach. “I’m not in this role to please a lot of people’s opinion. I have to do what’s best for this team and make sure I’m leading in that way. ” he said. “Unfortunately, everybody isn’t happy when you make changes. When you make decisions from my chair, everybody isn’t happy. And that’s OK. because I know everything I try to do and strive to do is for the men in that locker room. to give those guys as best a chance possible to go out and win our first football game.”.

Despite his history with the responsibility, Ryans maintains that reclaiming the role is not a personal objective. He describes the move as a tactical necessity aimed at sparking change rather than overhauling the defense entirely. He will get his first opportunity to test that spark when the Texans travel to face the Titans in Week 5.
