CVS pharmacy – CVS has opened a pharmacy-focused location in Boston’s Nubian Square, responding to community concerns following a series of local Walgreens closures.
Residents of Nubian Square finally have a new local option for their prescriptions, as a pharmacy-only CVS store opened its doors in Roxbury this Wednesday.
The shop arrives as a direct response to a gap in care. After a string of closures by Walgreens—which shuttered one Roxbury site in 2022 and another in 2024. alongside locations in Hyde Park and Mattapan—many neighbors had been forced to travel significant distances just to fill daily medications. The new store in Nubian Square is designed to fill that void. prioritizing health services over the aisles of shampoo and snacks found in a typical chain location.
Spanning approximately 3,000 square feet, the site offers a full-service pharmacy, immunizations, and a limited selection of over-the-counter products. While the footprint is smaller than traditional stores, the company is positioning it as a specialized community resource. It will feature a safe medication-disposal bin for expired or unwanted drugs and serves as a safe needle collection site. Customers who need retail goods not stocked on-site can opt for free home delivery.
“We are reimagining how pharmacy care is delivered by creating locations designed around the needs of the communities we serve,” said Sid Tenneti, Senior Vice President and Interim President, Pharmacy and Consumer Wellness for CVS Health.
The location sits in a neighborhood that already maintains an independent option. Kornfield Pharmacy. which has continued to serve the area throughout the period of retail contraction. While the grand opening was held Wednesday. the store actually began operations on August 26. following an initial plan for a July launch.
This shift reflects a broader strategy for the Woonsocket, Rhode Island-based health giant. As CVS Health—which operates about 9. 000 retail locations. manages benefits for over 87 million members. and runs more than 1. 000 walk-in medical clinics—realigns its retail footprint. it is pivoting toward smaller neighborhood pharmacies. The company plans to roll out nearly 20 of these pharmacy-only formats across the country this year. joining sites already active in Alabama. Illinois. Michigan. Texas. and Washington. D.C.
