Coco Gauff Defends Integrity Amidst China Open Controversy

Coco Gauff navigates a storm of online abuse and accusations of cheating following a heated, match-altering point against Sun Xinran at the China Open.
The tension inside the Beijing arena was palpable when Coco Gauff. trailing 5-4 in the first set. abruptly threw her hands in the air. As her 16-year-old opponent. Sun Xinran. moved to capitalize on a poor shot from the American. the rally came to a screeching halt. Gauff had spotted a flickering light in the side panel—though the distraction only seemed to manifest after she had already hit her volley.
The umpire granted the replay. The momentum, which had been firmly with the teenager, evaporated in an instant. From that pivotal moment. the 22-year-old Gauff surged. steamrolling through the remainder of the match and dropping only one game thereafter. As the match concluded. Sun was visibly emotional. leaving the court as the center of a debate that quickly spilled off the court and into the vitriol of social media.
By the following day, the discourse had darkened significantly. Gauff, who reached the last 16 with the victory, found herself battling more than just her next opponent. She was forced to address a deluge of racist messages. including a slur-filled post she amplified on X to highlight the severity of the harassment she had received over the previous few hours.
“You can dislike me or disagree about what happened without being racist. ” Gauff wrote. addressing the online abuse that eventually triggered platform intervention for violating rules against hateful conduct. “The amount of racist comments/dms I’ve received in the last few hours is insane. Lastly, I’m not a cheater or a thief.”.
In her attempts to address the incident, Gauff argued that she was simply navigating the protocols of professional tennis. She explained that players are permitted to challenge circumstances after a point concludes. a rule she believes is standard across most sports. She admitted that while she wasn’t certain if the light was truly flickering during that initial shot. her hesitation was born of a genuine concern about the court conditions.
“If I would’ve lost the point my opponent is also free to do the same thing and ask for a replay and she would’ve been completely in her right to do so. ” Gauff noted. She described the backlash as “ridiculous” given that she was merely following established regulations. Despite the animosity directed her way, Gauff reached out to her teenage opponent, apologizing for the circumstances of the point. She praised Sun as an “incredible talent” and expressed hope for her future. noting that the two had reconciled at the conclusion of the match.
Gauff now turns her attention to a round of 16 clash against Belgium’s Elise Mertens, scheduled for this Wednesday. While she moves forward in the tournament, the echoes of the Beijing match—and the hostility that followed—remain a heavy shadow over her progression.
