Caleb Wilson Sets High Bar In Bulls Preseason Debut

No. 4 overall pick Caleb Wilson debuted for the Chicago Bulls on Wednesday, balancing team success with his bold pursuit of Rookie of the Year honors.
The pivot was textbook. the spin precise. and the 20-foot jumper that followed found the bottom of the net with 6:01 remaining in the first quarter. For any other player, the first bucket of an NBA career might be a moment to savor. For Caleb Wilson, the Bulls’ No. 4 overall pick, it was simply a starting point.
Wilson arrived in Wednesday’s 124-117 preseason victory over the Phoenix Suns with a mandate to reshape the franchise. He isn’t interested in being a quiet contributor; he is intent on delivering highlights that force the league to pay attention. His debut performance—15 points on 6-of-15 shooting—included a breakaway dunk and a reverse layup that drew a foul. though he went 0-for-4 from three-point range.
“Preseason might not count statistically or anything like that, but honestly we’re all visual and if you see something that you think is impressive, you’re going to gravitate towards it,” Wilson said. “My first impression for the league and myself and my team started Wednesday.”
That impression remains a work in progress. While Wilson has openly campaigned for Rookie of the Year. coach Tiago Splitter views the path to such accolades through the lens of team-first development. Splitter noted that while he doesn’t personally prioritize individual awards, he recognizes the work Wilson puts in behind the noise. “He really is saying everything that goes through his mind,” Splitter said. “He’s being honest. He wants to be a great player… but he still has a lot to do.”.
Defensively, the transition to the league proved demanding. Wilson acknowledged that the physicality and communication requirements of the NBA are a significant step up, an area he admitted needs continued growth. He graded his own performance as a “B,” noting that his mistakes are correctable.
The broader Bulls roster also showed the typical unevenness of a preseason opener. The starters. including Matas Buzelis—who scored 10 of his 14 points in the first half—and Norman Powell. who added 14 points in 14 minutes. built an early 18-13 lead. However, the bench struggled significantly while covering for Tre Jones, who was sidelined with a sore hip. Rookie Dailyn Swain faced particular difficulty while handling ball-duty; he played roughly seven total minutes. finished minus-10 in plus/minus. and logged two turnovers alongside three fouls.
With high expectations comes the friction of reality. Wilson is tethered to a vision of himself as an organizational foundation. but the journey to that status is measured in defensive lapses. shooting percentages. and the steady accumulation of experience. For now. the Bulls have a rookie who is as vocal about his ambitions as he is committed to the work required to meet them.
