Bruins Shuffle Lines After Stagnant Start to Season

Following a two-goal performance over their last two games, Boston Bruins coach Marco Sturm has overhauled his forward lines in search of an offensive spark.
The frustration was palpable at Warrior Ice Arena on Wednesday morning. After managing just two goals over their last two games, the Boston Bruins hit the ice for practice with a drastically altered look, as head coach Marco Sturm put the team’s forward corps into a blender.
The reorganization touched every level of the lineup. Pavel Zacha was promoted to the top line to skate alongside David Pastrnak and Morgan Geekie. Meanwhile. Elias Lindholm was moved from the first-line center position to the third line. tasked with anchoring a group featuring rookie James Hagens and Casey Mittelstadt. The second line saw JJ Peterka shift into a role next to Fraser Minten and Marat Khusnutdinov. both of whom were elevated from the third-line pairing.
Sturm admitted that while he values consistency, the current stagnation left him little choice. “Having said that. with the training camp we had and also a few players are different. it’s challenging. ” Sturm said. “It’s not going to happen overnight. Hopefully in the next little while it’s going to play and there’s some lines or pairs that are going to come up and shine.”.
The urgency is driven by a top unit that has struggled to find its rhythm. The trio of Pastrnak. Geekie. and Zacha—who combined for 98 goals and 233 points last season—has failed to score a single goal through the first four games of the year. managing only three assists between them. Zacha, currently in the final year of his contract, remains optimistic that the numbers will eventually follow the process. “If you see we score only two goals in four games. you want to be that guy to help the team. ” Zacha said. “But on the other hand, it’s still the start of the season… I just need to find a way to keep creating and not get frustrated with it.”.
Beyond the even-strength lines, the Bruins are staring down a 0-for-10 drought on the power play. During Wednesday’s practice, rookie Frederic Brunet quarterbacked the top unit, joined by Pastrnak, Geekie, Zacha, and Elias Lindholm. Brunet is serving as a placeholder for Charlie McAvoy. who remains sidelined for two more games to complete a six-game suspension.
Sturm identified the power play’s passivity as a primary issue. noting that the team lacks the necessary directness to threaten opposing nets. “We’re just not direct enough,” Sturm said. “We didn’t have that intensity, the drive to play fast and also attack that net. We just kind of want to make plays and plays and plays, and it’s not going to happen.”.
As the team prepares for Thursday’s matchup against the Utah Mammoth. the new combinations are set. though not permanently inked. The roster currently lists Tanner Jeannot. Matt Poitras. and Mark Kastelic as the fourth-line unit. with Sean Kuraly. Hampus Lindholm. Will Borgen. Nikita Zadorov. Connor Clifton. Frederic Brunet. Mason Lohrei. Jonathan Aspirot. and Charlie McAvoy rounding out the defense. Jeremy Swayman and Michael DiPietro occupy the crease. For a team that has historically relied on established chemistry. the coming days will serve as a high-stakes experiment to see if a rearranged deck can produce the goals the club desperately needs.
