Beijing Nominates Senior Official to Lead Global Health Agency

China WHO – China has put forward senior health official Song Li to succeed Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus at the WHO, signaling a strategic push to expand its influence in global governance.

By the time the World Health Assembly gathers in May. the future of the World Health Organization will look very different. The agency’s current director-general. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. is nearing the end of his second five-year term and is barred by WHO rules from seeking reelection. leaving a vacuum at the top of the world’s most influential health body.

Beijing moved to fill that space on Thursday, nominating senior health official Song Li to lead the organization. As a veteran who navigated the front lines of both the COVID-19 pandemic and the SARS crisis. Song brings a background centered on maternal and child healthcare policy and international cooperation.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning framed the nomination as a commitment to global stability. “China’s nomination of Dr. Song Li to run for the position reflects China’s willingness to work with all parties to jointly promote the building of a community of health for all humanity. and demonstrates China’s firm support for multilateralism and the WHO. ” Mao said.

Song enters a crowded field. The race already includes a diverse list of international hopefuls: Dr. Hanan Mohammed Al-Kuwari of Qatar; Dr. Hanan Balkhy of Saudi Arabia; Dr. Hans Kluge of Belgium; Dr. María Neira of Spain; Indonesian candidate Budi Gunadi Sadikin; and Dr. Gevorg Tamamyan of Botswana. While the formal deadline for candidacies passed on September 24, the timeline for public announcements remains fluid.

The path to the directorship moves through a series of filters. The WHO’s executive board is scheduled to meet between late January and early February to trim the current list down to just three finalists. Those candidates will then face the full World Health Assembly in May, where member countries will elect the successor. Tedros will remain in the role until his term officially concludes on August 15.

Beijing’s push for the WHO leadership is a calculated play for influence. While Chinese nationals once held the top spots in as many as four United Nations organizations simultaneously. they currently lead only one: the Rome-based Food and Agriculture Organization. directed by Qu Dongyu. This bid arrives as the U.S. has navigated a period of shifting priorities, having withdrawn from various international and U.N. bodies under President Donald Trump’s administration, leaving space for other nations to step into roles of institutional authority.
