Basketball Rivalries Ignite Mason Grounds in Major Venue Shift
Tennis courts in Mason, Ohio, transformed into a basketball arena for the inaugural CareSource Invitational, signaling a new era for the historic facility.
The familiar surface of Center Court in Mason. Ohio. usually reserved for the precision of tennis rackets. echoed with the squeak of sneakers and the roar of a crowd on Tuesday. For the inaugural CareSource Invitational. the Cincinnati Open grounds underwent a radical transformation. swapping baseline stripes for three-point lines to host four of Ohio’s elite college basketball programs.
More than 10,000 fans filled the seats to witness the rare outdoor exhibition. The competition lived up to the intensity of traditional rivalries: the University of Cincinnati took down Ohio State 79-68 in the opening matchup. while Xavier claimed the nightcap with an 82-75 victory over Dayton. For those in the stands. it was a rare opportunity to scout their teams before the official season tips off next month.
“Ohio is just such a great spot for basketball talent, so this is a great step,” said Matthew Gressel, an Ohio State fan who attended the games. He expressed a sentiment shared by many in the crowd, adding, “I’d like to see it come back next year with more teams.”
Beyond the final scores, the event served as a platform for raising awareness regarding youth mental health and suicide prevention. It also acted as a proof-of-concept for the facility’s $260 million renovation. Organizers dedicated days to the logistical challenge of installing a temporary court. turning a premier tennis destination into a versatile sporting arena.
This shift fits into a wider strategy to transition the venue into a year-round destination for entertainment and athletics. Ben Baumeister. the senior director of event strategy for the Cincinnati Open. described the experimental spirit behind the move: “How do we create events that are going to be incredibly unique and be great memories for anybody that comes here?. Our goal is really to do events like this throughout the year. Concerts aren’t off the table for us.”.
While the specific calendar for future events remains under wraps, the path forward is becoming clear. The facility is moving to establish itself as a multi-sport hub, with the venue’s Sporting Club and restaurant already operating on a year-round basis to anchor the expanded offerings.
