Arizona Candidate Reveals Rape Amidst Congressional Campaign Trail

Democratic candidate Bernadette Greene-Placentia has come forward with a report of a violent sexual assault that occurred while she was maintaining campaign materials.

Bernadette Greene-Placentia was working in a parking lot in the dead of night. focused on repairing one of her campaign signs. when her life shifted in a violent instant. It was mid-August. around 2 a.m. when the Democratic congressional candidate for Arizona’s 8th District says she was struck in the head and lost consciousness.

She woke up on the ground, partially clothed and in pain. According to a police report provided by her campaign, Greene-Placentia was assaulted by two men. She recalled fighting back during the second assault. only for the attacker to stop and tell her. “Not even worth it” before retreating. She told authorities that one of the men had called her a “Democratic bitch” during the encounter.

Greene-Placentia, who is challenging incumbent Republican Rep. Abe Hamadeh for the seat covering parts of Phoenix and northern suburbs. waited two weeks before contacting the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office. She told local reporters she had initially stayed silent because she was embarrassed and desperate to forget the night ever happened. In the immediate aftermath. she took showers and a bath. but she did not undergo a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) test or photograph the bruises left on her body.

She has been left with only fragmented memories of the incident. She told investigators she cannot remember the specific clothing or faces of her attackers. though she believes both men were white. “It’s just these little tiny flashes of things that I do remember,” she said. “As much as I don’t want to remember, I’ve tried very, very hard to remember more stuff. But that’s where I’m at.”.

The gap between the event in August and the report filed with law enforcement underscores the isolation survivors often face. While the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed an investigation is underway, they have declined to comment on the specifics of the ongoing case.

Her campaign team notes that the decision to go public was not made lightly. Craig Beckman, the campaign’s director of communications, said that Greene-Placentia is still processing the trauma of the attack. He emphasized that she chose to share her story publicly in hopes of supporting other survivors who struggle in silence. As the campaign in the 8th District continues—a district that favored Donald Trump in 2024—the candidate remains focused on the recovery process while managing the demands of the congressional race.
