Anthropic Bans Verbal Abuse of AI in Policy Overhaul

Anthropic usage – Anthropic has updated its usage policies to explicitly ban election interference, weapons development, and the sustained verbal abuse of its AI models.

The boundary between human interaction and machine processing just became a formal line in the sand. On Thursday, Anthropic overhauled its usage policy, codifying a series of strict prohibitions that target everything from political manipulation to how users treat the models themselves.

Among the new rules. one stands out for its human dimension: a direct prohibition against the prolonged verbal abuse of the company’s AI. Claude. While the system has been programmed since an update in August to terminate conversations that cross into persistent. harmful territory. the new policy now places the responsibility on the user. expressly forbidding the behavior entirely.

“The policy update is meant to apply only in extreme cases. where users repeatedly act cruelly toward our models. with no discernible purpose. ” the company stated. clarifying that the change is not intended to stifle the venting of user frustration. pushback. or the exploration of dark creative themes. Neither will the policy impact researchers or developers testing the model’s limits.

Beyond interpersonal conduct, the company has tightened its grip on how its technology interacts with the public sphere. New, distinct sections of the usage policy now explicitly forbid the use of Claude for broadly deceptive campaigns. This includes the creation of fake accounts or the operation of fabricated news outlets. activities now categorized under a strict directive: “Do Not Undermine Democratic Processes.” These rules specifically target deceptive practices aimed at voters or the disruption of elections. The policy also formalizes bans on the use of its models for developing weapons software or facilitating surveillance.

This shift in conduct guidelines coincides with an unusual period of philosophical exploration for the company. Anthropic has recently sought out collaborations with prominent religious scholars, in some cases attempting to make the case that Claude could possess a soul or a form of consciousness.

By moving from reactive software triggers to a defined policy of prohibition. Anthropic is essentially moving to govern the behavior of its users as much as the output of its code. The distinction between a test of the model’s creative capacity and an act of abuse now rests on a policy definition that seeks to separate human cruelty from technological inquiry.
