A Fully Functional Gaming Console Inside An Antenna Plug
smallest TV – Engineering hobbyist RayTriangle has pushed miniaturization to its limit, packing a working DOOM-capable console into the casing of a standard television antenna plug.
When you look at a legacy antenna plug, most see a relic of 300-ohm feeders and coaxial cables. RayTriangle saw a chassis. By transforming a standard screw-terminal antenna plug into a housing. the developer has managed to fit a functional gaming console—complete with a battery—into a space no larger than a thumb.
The heart of the device is an ESP32-S3 microcontroller. It handles the heavy lifting. pairing over Bluetooth to a controller. while generating a composite video signal through a resistor-ladder DAC. To get that signal onto a screen. the system uses a clever workaround: a lookup table generates phase-shifted chroma waveforms. which are then modulated onto a carrier signal provided directly by the ESP’s internal clock generator.
Two custom boards sandwich a small battery, connected by a flexible PCB to minimize the physical footprint. The output, currently tuned for PAL televisions with VHF tuners, displays a grainy but recognizable version of DOOM. While the signal carries some visible noise, the technical foundation suggests that simple signal filtering could sharpen the image significantly.
The project forces a collision between modern processing and vintage hardware standards. In an era where digital HDMI connections are the baseline. routing a game through an analog RF input feels like a deliberate act of technical rebellion. There is a distinct audacity in using an obsolete 300-ohm connector to drive a 2026-era portable gaming experience.
Questions of compatibility remain, as the current design is locked to PAL/VHF standards. Whether this could be adapted for UHF or NTSC signals depends on future ingenuity. but the core achievement stands: the world’s smallest console has officially moved past the theoretical stage and into the hardware phase.
