A Chronology of Rising West Bank Attacks Targeting Foreign Officials, Journalists, and Palestinians

A series of violent assaults by Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank has increasingly targeted foreign diplomats, international journalists, and local olive harvesters, culminating in a tense diplomatic standoff over official accountability. The surge in violence has coincided with the annual olive harvest season, occurring just weeks ahead of scheduled elections in Israel.
On October 17, 2026, a delegation of European diplomats and officials was attacked near the Palestinian village of Taybeh while visiting local farmers. The targeted group included Belgium’s consul general, along with French and Polish diplomats, Catholic representatives, and Bernard Baudoux, the mayor of a French town who was assaulted during the confrontation. Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot linked the episode to Israel’s settlement policies, while French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot urged Israeli authorities to arrest the perpetrators and guarantee civilian safety under international law. Video footage from the scene captured masked men carrying sticks and threatening witnesses. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office characterized reports of the incident as alleged and asserted that compelling evidence was required.
One day earlier, on October 16, veteran American journalist Heidi Levine, a 64-year-old freelancer for the Washington Post, was brutally beaten while reporting on olive farmers in the region. Witnesses reported that Levine, who was wearing a clearly marked press vest, was surrounded, kicked repeatedly, and robbed of her equipment before being evacuated to a hospital in Ramallah. Independent journalist Jasper Nathaniel, who witnessed the attack, stated that Israeli soldiers arrived afterward and deployed live ammunition and tear gas against Palestinians, injuring a man in the leg while allegedly impeding medical personnel. Netanyahu’s office issued a conditional statement maintaining that the facts remained unclear and calling for an investigation.
The October incidents follow a series of similar confrontations over recent years. On October 6, 2026, Israeli settlers beat Palestinian AFP photographer Jaafar Ashtiyeh with rifle butts near Nablus after a quadbike rushed toward a press crew and gunfire was discharged. In July 2026, U.S. Representative Ro Khanna reported that he and a tour group were detained by armed settlers in the West Bank, accusing the Israeli military of siding with the group. Khanna later traded public criticisms with Netanyahu over the subsequent statements regarding the attack on Levine. Earlier documented attacks include a November 2025 incident where Canadian and Italian activists were injured in a Bedouin community in the Jericho governorate, the July 2025 killing of Palestinian activist Awdah Hathaleen in Masafer Yatta, and a July 2024 assault on American and German volunteers assisting farmers near Qusra.
