Positive signs emerge as Islanders await Mat Barzal’s season debut

New York Islanders center Mat Barzal is making steady progress in his recovery from persistent left knee issues that have delayed his season debut, according to general manager Mathieu Darche. While the club has yet to establish a definitive timetable for his return to the lineup, medical staff have cleared the forward to advance his rehab whenever he feels ready.

Speaking at UBS Arena on Wednesday, Darche reported that the inflammation which initially sidelined Barzal during training camp is now controlled. The original plan called for Barzal to resume skating around the start of the season, a milestone that was delayed by about a week. He has spent the last two weeks skating on his own and walked past reporters briefly on Wednesday.

“Initially there was some inflammation. We feel it’s controlled now. Now it’s getting him to feel comfortable to take the next step,” Darche said. He added that there have been no setbacks or medical procedures since training camp.

Barzal’s ongoing recovery involves managing his left kneecap, which was fractured two years ago and required surgical repair. Despite the previous trauma, Barzal successfully played 81 games last season while managing the joint. Darche emphasized that team management does not believe their handling of the injury contributed to the recent flare-up, and confirmed that no additional medical procedures are currently under discussion.

“If it doesn’t get better, you’re always looking at where we think he can be,” Darche said. “We don’t believe [that’s necessary] right now. But we’re progressing. I think it’s going in the right direction.”

The next milestone in Barzal’s recovery will be joining the team for upcoming practices, potentially wearing a non-contact jersey. The Islanders face a decision regarding whether he will accompany the club on an upcoming road trip featuring games in Dallas, Nashville, and Minnesota, which could facilitate his integration back into team practices.

The Islanders have weathered early-season absences well, posting a 5-3-1 record heading into Thursday’s home matchup against the Los Angeles Kings under coach Pete DeBoer, despite missing Barzal alongside Calum Ritchie and Matias Maccelli.

Darche stressed that the final decision on when Barzal returns to full activity is a collaborative process between the player, medical staff, and management.

“We both work together,” Darche said. “The doctors would be comfortable for him to ramp up whenever he’s ready. It’s not necessarily, ‘Oh it’s all him,’ or it’s all us. We’re trying to work together on this. But of course he has a big say. It’s his body. He knows how he feels.”

In addition to addressing Barzal’s status, Darche dismissed recent trade speculation surrounding defenseman Scott Mayfield. Reports had suggested Mayfield might request a move if he remained in the press box as an extra defenseman, but Darche flatly rejected the rumor.

“I can tell you right now, there’s no truth to any of those rumors,” Darche said, noting that Mayfield’s agent, Matt Keator, had been recently visiting players at the facility.
