Power Blip Triggers Industrial Flaring and Smoke Plumes at Brazoria County Chemical Plant

Residents in the Alvin area observed heavy smoke and flames filling the sky on Tuesday following an operational disruption at a major industrial facility in Brazoria County.
According to a company official, the INEOS Chocolate Bayou Works plant suffered a sudden “power blip” that triggered the facility’s olefins units to enter a failsafe mode. This automatic shift resulted in the de-inventorying of the units through industrial flaring, a controlled process designed to manage manufacturing safety.
The company official explained that flaring serves as an essential safety mechanism in which excess hydrocarbons are safely combusted and dissipated utilizing a natural gas flame. Officials emphasized that despite the heavy smoke visible in the area, the operational response posed no immediate safety risk to the surrounding community.
Video footage submitted from the area captured thick clouds of smoke billowing from the industrial site as the safety measures took effect. In response to the visibility of the flare, Brazoria County authorities issued an alert through the Community Awareness and Emergency Response system to inform residents of the activity.
The official CAER message confirmed that the INEOS Chocolate Bayou site, located at 15926 FM 2004 in Alvin, Texas, was actively conducting flaring operations to manage its manufacturing processes securely and responsibly. Local officials reiterated that the safety measure protects both personnel and the environment by preventing uncombusted gases from escaping directly into the atmosphere.
Authorities confirmed that no protective action, evacuation, or shelter-in-place measure was required by local residents as a result of the industrial flaring event.
