Kate Middleton Wears Elie Saab Gown and Historic Tiara for State Banquet

The Princess of Wales attended a state banquet at Windsor Castle on Tuesday night welcoming the Sultan of Oman, Sultan Haitham bin Tarik al Said, wearing a vibrant yellow ensemble paired with historic royal jewels.

Middleton wore a bright yellow keyhole gown designed by Elie Saab. The $6,500 pleated dress featured a braided neckline and a transparent cape, originating from the designer’s spring/summer 2025 collection. To complement the outfit, she selected the Queen Mary’s Lover’s Knot Tiara, a crown featuring teardrop-shaped pearls that was famously a favorite of the late Princess Diana. The tiara was last worn by Diana in 1991 before Middleton began wearing it in 2015.

Her evening jewelry included the Greville diamond chandelier earrings and Queen Mary’s diamond choker bracelet. She also wore her customary badge, sash, and star of the Royal Victorian Order. Finishing the look, the princess carried a gold glitter Anya Hindmarch clutch and wore Aquazzura gold sequined pumps. Prince William attended the event dressed in a Windsor tailcoat featuring the Most Noble Order of the Garter, along with a sash and the Lesser George.

Earlier in the day, Middleton participated in the official welcome for the Sultan of Oman wearing a bespoke hunter green Alexander McQueen coat paired with a black lace turtleneck top. She accessorized the daytime look with a matching fascinator, a classic quilted leather Chanel flap bag, and the historic Queen Alexandra Three Feathers Brooch.

The brooch, featuring a trio of ostrich feathers surrounded by a circle of larger diamonds with a detachable emerald drop at the base, carried distinct symbolic value. Green is one of Oman’s national colors, and the emerald drop complemented the hunter green of her coat. The piece is set in gold originally mined in Merionethshire, North Wales, and bears the German motto “Ich dien,” meaning “I serve.”

Crafted in 1863 by the royal jeweler Garrard, the brooch was given to Queen Alexandra as a wedding gift funded by a committee of women known as the Ladies of North Wales. Traditionally passed down to the woman married to the Prince of Wales regardless of generation or title, the brooch has previously been worn by Queen Mary of Teck, Princess Diana, and Queen Camilla. Princess Diana famously wore the piece on multiple occasions, occasionally opting to style it as a pendant necklace. Middleton has frequently chosen the versatile antique piece since coming into ownership of the diamond brooch in 2022.
