Formula 1 Chief Stefano Domenicali Outlines Strategy for Expansion, Youth Engagement, and the U.S. Market

Formula 1 Chief Executive Stefano Domenicali has addressed a wide array of future sporting and commercial strategies for the global racing series, offering updates on race calendars, audience expansion, and the long-term direction of the sport.
Speaking on upcoming events, Domenicali confirmed that the race schedules for the final stretch of the season in Qatar and Abu Dhabi remain locked in place. While management has alternative arrangements drafted should unforeseen circumstances arise, the current operational directive is to proceed as planned.
Looking toward future global footprints, Domenicali addressed ongoing discussions regarding a potential Grand Prix in Africa. He identified Rwanda as the sole nation that has put forward a concrete and serious proposal to host a race, indicating that a Grand Prix could materialize in the country much earlier than the end of the decade.
Beyond traditional circuits, Formula 1 continues to target younger demographics through creative commercial partnerships following the success of media ventures like documentary streaming series and forthcoming feature films. Domenicali highlighted active relationships with major brands such as Disney and Lego as central components of a broader strategy to diversify the sport’s audience base and capture the attention of children.
The American market remains a major strategic frontier for the championship. According to Domenicali, the growth potential in the United States is immense, driven by fans who immerse themselves in the sport throughout the day. Regarding the prospect of an American driver on the grid to further fuel domestic interest, he emphasized that competitive merit remains paramount. While having a local driver would be advantageous, he noted that a passport alone is insufficient and athletes must earn their place through speed.
Addressing diversity within the sport, Domenicali expressed optimism regarding the eventual arrival of a female Formula 1 driver during his lifetime, though he cautioned against imposing an artificial deadline. He stated that physical barriers preventing women from competing no longer exist in the modern era, though establishing a precise timeline remains unrealistic.
When questioned about staging events in regions with different social and political values, Domenicali acknowledged the challenges of satisfying a vast global community, emphasizing that the sport’s primary objective remains connecting people across cultures.
With his current contract extending through 2029, Domenicali reflected on the intense travel and personal demands of leading the motorsport series. He admitted that upon the conclusion of his current commitment, achieving a better balance between his professional responsibilities and personal life with family and friends will be a primary consideration.
