Federal Immigration Fraud Investigation Into Representative Ilhan Omar Centers on Citizenship Paperwork

Federal investigators are probing citizenship paperwork belonging to Representative Ilhan Omar as part of an immigration fraud investigation that led to a pre-dawn raid on her Washington, D.C., residence last week.

Agents with Homeland Security Investigations, the primary investigative arm of the Department of Homeland Security, executed a search warrant at the D.C. home at approximately 6:00 a.m. on Monday. Sources familiar with the operation confirmed that the inquiry focuses on whether false information was provided on citizenship documentation submitted by the Minnesota Democrat or her father.

Border official Tom Homan stated over the weekend that if the allegations are substantiated, the findings could potentially result in denaturalization proceedings for the congresswoman. Reports indicate that approximately a dozen individuals, including several of Omar’s relatives, have been subpoenaed in connection with the ongoing probe. Additionally, three sources confirmed that Omar’s sister, Sahra Noor, voluntarily spoke with federal investigators last week, prompting the cancellation of a scheduled appearance on a book tour in Minnesota due to what organizers described as a family emergency.

Representative Omar has not been seen publicly since the federal search, during which her phone and passport were reportedly seized. Responding to the operation on social media hours after the raid, she characterized the action as a partisan abuse of power. “This raid by Trump’s DHS is an outrageous abuse of power and an unprecedented escalation in the weaponization of federal law enforcement to target political enemies,” Omar said in a public statement, adding that she has done nothing wrong.

In contrast, Vice President JD Vance rejected assertions that the inquiry is politically motivated. In an interview following the search, Vance maintained that the administration seeks to let the law and facts guide the investigation rather than political considerations. “We really want to let the law, the facts drive this,” Vance said, noting that appropriate steps will be taken if justice requires further action.

In the days following the search, family members and associates have been seen at the D.C. property. Isra Hirsi, the congresswoman’s 23-year-old eldest daughter, arrived at the home in a black sedan under the cover of darkness on Saturday night, carrying a bag into the residence. When approached outside the house, Hirsi declined to answer questions, asking reporters what their problem was. A younger teenage girl was also seen entering the property alongside a companion, while Omar’s son is the only immediate family member not observed arriving at the residence since the raid.

Tim Mynett, a political consultant married to Omar, has intermittently emerged from the house to walk the family dog. Mynett stated that he has no concerns regarding the investigation and dismissed rumors that the congresswoman had fled the country.

The investigation has also drawn renewed public scrutiny to the personal and political histories of the congresswoman’s family members. Isra Hirsi, a graduate of Barnard College who co-founded the U.S. Climate Strike in 2019, has previously attracted public attention as an activist. She was arrested and subsequently suspended from Columbia University in 2024 following her participation in an anti-Israel campus encampment that was eventually cleared by police.

U.S. Capitol Police officers were also dispatched to the street outside Omar’s residence on the same night her eldest daughter arrived. While the jurisdiction of the Capitol Police is generally restricted to the U.S. Capitol complex and its grounds, authority extends to the protection of members of Congress and their immediate families.
