Democrats Eye Elon Musk for Sweeping Congressional Investigations if House Flips

House Democrats are laying the groundwork for aggressive investigations into billionaire Republican donor Elon Musk if they capture the chamber in upcoming midterm elections, targeting everything from his corporate federal contracts to his controversial tenure remaking the federal bureaucracy.

More than a year after his departure from official government service, Musk remains a central figure in Democratic oversight plans. Potential committee chairs and rank-and-file lawmakers across multiple panels see numerous avenues to probe the world’s richest man, whose political committees have funneled $276 million and counting into Republican campaigns.

Among the top areas of interest are Musk’s multibillion-dollar federal portfolio—including SpaceX’s launch agreements with NASA and Tesla’s clean-energy subsidies—alongside his past role leading the Department of Government Efficiency, known as DOGE. Lawmakers are also raising concerns over his reported involvement in throttling internet access for the Ukrainian military as the White House pushes for peace negotiations.

“What happens when one guy gets a giant contract from the government and then uses it to do something that shuts down communication in a war that has been extremely important to the United States to support Ukraine?” said Democratic Rep. Pramila Jayapal of Washington, a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee. “There’s a lot of different parts of the corruption around Musk.”

Several committees are already mapping out jurisdictional claims. While Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has maintained a primary midterm focus on economic affordability, he has consistently emphasized the necessity of reining in the well-connected wealthy elite. Meanwhile, individual lawmakers and committee aides are actively planning hearings and subpoenas.

Even before potential shifts in the House gavels, some panels have initiated pressure campaigns. House Homeland Security Committee Democrats demanded last month that Musk testify under oath regarding a Government Accountability Office report that accused DOGE of overstating its financial savings. The House Ways and Means Committee has likewise called for investigations into alleged data theft from Social Security tied to the efficiency initiative.

Lawmakers overseeing science, space, and foreign relations also intend to scrutinize the fallout from Musk’s five-month stint driving deep federal cuts. Representative Zoe Lofgren of California, top Democrat on the Space, Science and Technology Committee, criticized what she described as the systematic dismantling of government programs.

“Elon Musk and his DOGE cronies stirred up chaos, ruined careers, and played a large role in illegal grant cancellations and firings of civil servants,” Lofgren said in a statement. She added that her committee has more to learn regarding the damage inflicted on science agencies.

Representative Greg Meeks of New York, leading Democrat on the Foreign Affairs panel, called for a full accounting of the disruptions caused by DOGE and the dismantling of USAID, arguing the policies failed to save taxpayer money or enhance national security.

With the House Oversight Committee boasting one of the chamber’s largest investigative staffs, lawmakers anticipate it will spearhead inquiries into the legality of DOGE’s actions, which included roughly 250,000 federal job cuts and allegations of unlawfully withheld spending. Members of the panel privately described the initiative as a foundational breach of administrative law.

Representatives for Musk did not respond to multiple requests for comment regarding the planned congressional inquiries.
