2026 Midterm Elections: Key House Races Across the United States Set the Stage for Control of Congress

Control of the U.S. House of Representatives takes center stage in the upcoming November elections, with Republicans working to defend their narrow majority and Democrats mounting aggressive campaigns to retake the chamber. While all 435 House seats are up for grabs, the final balance of power is expected to hinge on a select group of fiercely contested races spanning multiple states. Historical trends show the president’s party typically loses House seats during midterm elections, but Republican-led map-redrawing efforts in several states have added a complex new dynamic to the political landscape.

In Arizona’s 6th District, Republican Rep. Juan Ciscomani is seeking a third term in one of the country’s most evenly divided congressional zones. He faces Democratic challenger and U.S. Marine veteran JoAnna Mendoza. The district runs from the Tucson suburbs down to the U.S.-Mexico border, and a victory for Mendoza would make her the first openly LGBTQ+ person to represent the district. Meanwhile, in California’s 22nd District, progressive political science professor and school board member Randy Villegas advanced to face Republican David Valadao, who won his seat back in 2020 following a previous Democratic wave win in 2018. The state implemented new congressional maps under its 2025 redistricting process.

Colorado’s 8th District stands out as another top battleground. Republican Rep. Gabe Evans, who narrowly flipped the seat in 2024, is running for reelection against Democratic state representative and former McDonald’s fry cook Manny Rutinel. Stretching from Denver’s northern suburbs to Greeley, the district encompasses Colorado’s largest Hispanic population, placing economic concerns, health care, immigration, and affordability at the forefront of the campaign.

Florida features multiple closely watched contests following extensive map redrawing. In Florida’s 14th District, long-serving Democratic Rep. Kathy Castor faces her toughest reelection fight against former state Rep. Mike Beltran after state Republicans redrew the once-safe blue Tampa-area district into a more GOP-leaning territory. In Florida’s 22nd District, an open-seat race pits educator and former school principal Pia Dandiya, a Democrat, against restaurant franchisee and Marine veteran Casey Askar, a Republican. Despite President Donald Trump winning the Palm Beach, Broward, Hendry, and Collier county-spanning district by 11 points in 2024, forecasters rate the contest as a toss-up.

In Iowa’s 1st District, former Democratic state representative Christina Bohannon is challenging Republican Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks for a third time in a southeastern toss-up seat. Over in Michigan, the 4th District presents a potential opening for Democrats in western regions as voting patterns shift, despite Republican Rep. Bill Huizenga’s previous 12-point victory. Michigan’s 7th District features a rematch where progressive Democratic candidate Will Lawrence takes on Republican Tom Barrett, who narrowly flipped the central Lansing-area seat in 2024. In the Detroit suburbs of Michigan’s 10th District, prosecutor Christina Hines and military veteran Michael Bouchard are vying to succeed Rep. John James, who is running for governor.

Montana’s 1st Congressional District features an open seat following the retirement of Republican Rep. Ryan Zinke. Republican Aaron Flint, Democrat Sam Forstag, and Libertarian Nick Sheedy are contesting the general election. In New York’s 17th District, GOP Rep. Mike Lawler faces Army veteran and former White House national security official Cait Conley in a Hudson Valley district that Kamala Harris narrowly carried in 2024.

North Carolina’s 1st District brings a rematch between Democratic incumbent Don Davis and Republican Laurie Buckhout under newly redrawn, significantly more conservative boundaries. In North Carolina’s 11th District, Republican Rep. Chuck Edwards dropped his reelection bid in August amid contested accusations of inappropriate behavior with staff members, prompting his party to select state Rep. Jennifer Balkcom to face Democrat Jamie Ager. In Ohio’s 7th District, Republican Rep. Max Miller is seeking reelection while addressing domestic abuse allegations made by his ex-wife, facing union ironworker and city council member Brian Poindexter. Ohio’s 9th District features a rematch between the longest-serving woman member of Congress, Democratic Rep. Marcy Kaptur, and former state Rep. Derek Merrin, whom Kaptur defeated by just 2,382 votes in 2024.

Pennsylvania’s 8th District finds Republican Rep. Rob Bresnahan defending his narrowly flipped seat against Scranton Mayor Paige Cognetti, with stock trades becoming a prominent campaign issue. Pennsylvania’s 10th District hosts the state’s most expensive House race between conservative Republican Rep. Scott Perry and former television anchor Janelle Stelson, alongside independent candidate Isabelle Harman. In Texas, Republican Rep. Monica de la Cruz faces Tejano singer Bobby Pulido in the border-focused 15th District, while Democratic Rep. Vicente Gonzalez runs for a sixth term against Trump-endorsed Republican Eric Flores, Green Party candidate Eddie Espinoza, and Libertarian Chris Royal in the newly redrawn 34th District along the Rio Grande Valley.

Virginia’s 1st District features a tight race between Republican incumbent Rob Wittman and Democratic challenger Shannon Taylor, who recently registered a narrow lead in a published poll. In Virginia’s 2nd District, former Democratic Rep. Elaine Luria is seeking to reclaim her coastal seat from Republican incumbent Jen Kiggans in a matchup pairing two Navy veterans. Finally, in Wisconsin’s 3rd District, Republican Rep. Derrick Van Orden and Democrat Rebecca Cooke face off in a western district rematch of their narrow 2024 contest as national parties target competitive territory.
