Police say a 48-year-old woman was caught inside a Traverse City liquor store after employees saw her allegedly drinking alcohol without paying. What should have ended there, they say, became the start of a repeated routine—one that escalated fast when she came back the next day.
Officials say she returned and tried to take a bottle of Chardonnay. Store staff intervened. and after officers arrested her. a new detail surfaced that made the situation suddenly far more serious: police say the stolen bottle was discovered concealed in a body cavity while she was in custody. From there, authorities sent her to Munson Medical Center for treatment.
The arrests didn’t come out of nowhere. Police say this wasn’t her first run-in with the store. Just a day earlier, they allege she walked in and drank a bottle off the shelf around 9 a.m. without paying—before getting caught.
Twenty-four hours later, she reportedly returned again, and this time the attempted theft of the Chardonnay escalated into an arrest, a hospital trip, and multiple charges.
She is now facing two counts of retail fraud, one count of smuggling, and trespassing.

This sounds like one of those stories where the store is being dramatic. If it’s just a bottle of chardonnay, they can’t tell me they needed all that. Also “smuggling” seems kinda much… she’s literally in Michigan, not crossing a border.
Traverse City folks acting up again, huh. I heard something about her coming back the next day and then boom hospital. Idk if the “body cavity” part is true or just how the cops said it, but that’s still a way to make retail fraud sound like a cartel thing. Two counts of retail fraud + trespassing… seems like they really wanted to make an example.
