Two-thirds of demat accounts lie dormant, shows SEBI data

Only 33% of India’s 220 million demat accounts were active as of January 2026, SEBI data shows, signalling a sharp drop in retail trading participation after the post-pandemic surge.
Only one out of every three demat accounts — digital accounts used to hold shares and securities — was active as of January 2026, according to data compiled from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI).
