When the Knicks and Spurs tip off at Madison Square Garden on June 8, the spotlight won’t be only on basketball. New York officials have tightened security around the building because President Donald Trump plans to attend Game 3 of the 2026 NBA Finals.

The 8:30 p.m. June 8 game is expected to be the first time a seated U.S. president has attended the NBA Finals. For fans heading into MSG, that means more than bigger crowds and louder cheers. The presidential motorcade will drive up the five-story entrance ramp that players and coaches use to arrive. with Trump escorted to elevators and taken to a suite where he will watch the game.

While Trump is moved upstairs, the wing where the corresponding elevator is will be temporarily blocked off to foot traffic. Similar protocols are planned when he leaves the arena.

The NBA also warned fans that Trump’s expected appearance would bring extra security measures, and those changes were already visible nearly 12 hours before the Knicks and Spurs tip off. A security wall has been set up around the perimeter of the “World’s Most Famous Arena” in midtown Manhattan.

NYPD officials said the police perimeter will run from West 35th Street to West 30th Street between Sixth Avenue and Eighth Avenue around Madison Square Garden. All fans will pass TSA-style magnetometer screening before entering the arena, with U.S. Secret Service official Matt McCool encouraging attendees to arrive at least two hours before the Monday 8:30 p.m. ET tip.

The heightened preparation extends beyond the building itself. A planned watch party for Game 3 outside MSG has been canceled. More than two dozen people were arrested at a similar party last Friday during Game 2 of the series between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs, authorities said.

With President Trump and NYC mayor Zohran Mandami planning to attend as the series shifts to New York. security has been put on heightened alert. The Knicks. who are making their first appearance in the NBA Finals since 1999. have seen strong local turnout—nearly 7. 000 fans packed into MSG to watch New York’s 105-104 victory in San Antonio.

Authorities said 26 people were detained after that Game 2 watch gathering, with 17 arrested and charged.

Adam Silver. the NBA commissioner. confirmed Trump’s long-standing Knicks fandom last week when asked about the President’s potential attendance at Madison Square Garden. Silver said. “Donald Trump. before he ever ran for office. he was a big Knicks fan. ” and added that Trump “attended many of our drafts when they used to take place at Madison Square Garden.” Silver also said he hopes Trump’s presence will “emphasize what we have in common. not what pulls us apart. ” calling Trump “very much a New Yorker” and saying he was “thrilled that yet another New Yorker wants to participate in the enthusiasm and the joy around this Knick team.”.

A planned suite visit by a seated president. stricter screening at entry points. temporary access restrictions inside the arena. and the cancellation of an outdoor watch event all point in the same direction: this game day in New York is being treated as a security operation as much as a sports moment.

  1. I don’t even get why it needs to be that intense for one game. Like, can’t he just sit in a normal seat and everyone else chill? Probably gonna make regular fans late.

  2. Wait the elevator wing gets blocked off? That seems like it’s gonna cause chaos for normal people. Also first time a seated president goes to the NBA Finals?? I swear I heard Obama went to something like this years ago but maybe that was a different league.

  3. This is why New York can’t have nice things. They put up a security wall from 35th to 30th like it’s a whole war zone… and then people are gonna complain they can’t find the right entrance. TSA-style magnetometers sounds like overkill, but I guess if it stops “something” then whatever. Still seems like they’re punishing Knicks fans.
