Trump’s Iran deal anchors G7, but details still foggy

Trump’s tentative – At the G7 summit in France, President Donald Trump leaned heavily on a tentative Iran agreement, but unresolved questions about the text, Israel’s next moves, and how reopening the Strait of Hormuz will actually work remained front and center.

President Trump spent much of the G7 summit in Evian-les-Bains. France. pressing the case that his tentative agreement with Iran can move the world economy back toward stability. He also faced a more immediate problem: many of the details that could determine whether the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz actually holds are still not clear.

The U.S.-Israel-led war in Iran has rattled global markets and helped drain Trump’s standing at home. including hurting his approval ratings even among supporters. At the summit. that political pressure hung in the air as leaders posed for photos alongside British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Kenya’s President William Ruto. and French President Emmanuel Macron.

Trump was asked about when the text of the agreement would be made public. He said he expects it will be released on schedule.

“I think it is going to happen fairly on time. We have both been involved. Iran wants to get it done. They want to get back to business. Their relationship is now normalized, so I think it is going to go quickly,” Trump said Tuesday.

The president is scheduled to hold a press conference Wednesday morning at 9:30 a.m. ET before departing for Washington from France—an appointment that may become the sharpest moment yet for his credibility on this deal. Until then, the uncertainty remains not just over timelines, but over what the agreement actually commits the parties to.

Questions at the summit aren’t limited to paperwork. One of the biggest hinges on Israel’s behavior. Trump may be pressed on how confident he is that Israel won’t take actions that could destabilize the tentative agreement.

He addressed that concern indirectly, telling reporters yesterday that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu needs to dial down the aggression in Lebanon. “I’ve had a great relationship with Bibi, but now Bibi has to be more responsible with respect to Lebanon,” Trump said.

Alongside diplomatic reassurance, there is also the practical work tied to the Strait of Hormuz. Trump said he has been discussing with European leaders ways to help with the demining of the strait. a step that could determine whether shipping can move with less risk once the reopening process starts.

But as the Iran agreement dominated parts of the summit. another war refused to stay in the background: the conflict between Ukraine and Russia. Trump spoke with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the summit in Evian. and said Tuesday he plans to meet with Zelenskyy again. He also said he spoke with Russia’s Vladimir Putin on Sunday.

“Russia should make a deal. Russia has lost tremendous amounts of people, and so has Ukraine,” Trump said.

He added, “I have settled 8 wars, this was the one I thought would be the easiest to settle.”

Even with those statements, it remains unclear whether he is prepared to offer additional help to Ukraine—an unresolved question that lingers as the Iran track moves forward.

Right now. Trump’s Iran agreement sits in a tense middle ground: presented as a path back to normal business. yet still wrapped in unanswered questions about the timing of the text. the sequencing of reopening the Strait of Hormuz. and how events—especially in Lebanon—could test the deal before the world sees the fine print. Wednesday’s 9:30 a.m. ET press conference will likely be where those doubts finally get confronted head-on.
