Tom Cotton Responds to Trump Posting His Phone Number Over Daylight Savings Time Rift

Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AK) has responded to President Donald Trump posting his phone number and urging his followers to  “call Tom on his cellphone,” hours after the president made the wild request in a Saturday morning social media rant.

Trump made the post because he was upset about the Sunshine Protection Act stalling. The president has championed the legislation for years and pushed Congress to make daylight saving time permanent by ending the twice-yearly changing of the clock. The House passed it in July, but it has not made its way through the Senate — and it won’t anytime soon, with lawmakers not returning to Washington, D.C. until after the midterms.

The president doesn’t want to wait, though. To get the act across the finish line, Trump said he wanted Americans to call his “friend” and tell them they want it passed.

“For some reason, Tom is stopping the Bill and, in the Senate, it’s very easy to do, it only takes one! It should pass overwhelmingly, in a Bipartisan fashion,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “So, everyone in Arkansas, a State I love, and won 3 times, the last by by 34 points, tell Tom to, GET IT DONE!”

Three hours later, Cotton responded with a post on X.

No one likes changing the clock, me included, but Congress has enacted permanent Daylight Savings Time multiple times before and repealed it each time once Americans experienced absurdly late sunrises in the winter. Arkansans don’t want their kids going to school in the pitch dark, and I’ll always put Arkansas first.

As Mediaite’s Kathryn Wilkens noted earlier on Saturday, “the digits [in Trump’s post] match neither of the phone numbers listed on Cotton’s government website, meaning the president didn’t post a line meant for public use. The number does, however, have an Arkansas area code, matching those of Cotton’s publicly listed contacts.” Several journalists posted they tried calling Cotton on the number Trump posted, but phone went straight to voicemail and the mailbox was full.
