The sound hit the area as if it came from nowhere—dozens of sharp gunshots that sent reporters scrambling for cover and abruptly pulled President Donald Trump into lockdown.

Around 6:00 p.m. local time. a gunman fired three shots toward the White House from the west side. in an area described as near Gate 17. It’s close to 14th Street on the west side of the White House. The attacker brandished a pistol—its type was not immediately known—and never made it inside the perimeter.

During the chaos, a civilian on the street was struck by gunfire. The condition of the person who was hit was not immediately known.

The gunman was then met by Secret Service agents, who returned fire. How many shots the agents fired was not immediately known, but the attacker was taken down during the exchange. The condition of the pistol-wielding shooter also was not immediately known.

The attack unfolded while Trump was inside the Oval Office working on “getting a peace deal with Iran finished.” Earlier in the afternoon, he had posted that “final aspects and details” of the deal were being worked out and that the agreement would be “announced shortly.”

Reporters described a sudden scramble as law enforcement moved quickly. ABC News reporter Selina Wang said she dove for cover before she and her team were rushed to the White House press briefing room for safety. Several other reporters were rushed there as well. CNN reported its reporters heard dozens of gunshots, triggering a lockdown and a rapid response from Secret Service.

DC News Now reporter Chris Flanagan reported that he and other journalists were released from lockdown at 6:51 p.m. local time. He said there was a “huge” law enforcement response to the shots at the corner of 17th St. and Pennsylvania Ave.

Former FBI Special Agent Chris Swecker said for the White House lockdown to be lifted, the threat had to have been “completely neutralized.”

Taken together, the timeline is stark: three shots toward the White House, a civilian hit on the street, an exchange of gunfire, and a rapid Secret Service response that ended with the gunman taken down—without crossing into the White House grounds.

  1. This is insane. Like why is everybody acting so calm after shots near the White House? And they said a civilian got hit??

  2. I don’t buy the “just three shots” thing, if Secret Service returned fire then it was probably way more. Also the article says Trump was working on a peace deal with Iran like that matters, but if there was an attempt why didn’t they stop the deal or whatever.

  3. Gate 17 by 14th and Penn… that sounds like where they always have cameras and security. So the gunman didn’t make it inside but still got off shots? Either security is slipping or they’re leaving out details. I’m just mad at the thought of somebody getting shot out on the street.
