Reliable Robotics

Reliable Robotics, founded by SpaceX alum Robert Rose, is developing autonomous cargo aircraft. The company has already flown pilotless aircraft in tests and earlier this year raised $160 million at a valuation of roughly $1 billion.

Castelion

SpaceX lowered the cost and increased the scale of rocket launches. Castelion is trying to do something similar for hypersonic weapons—systems that travel at more than five times the speed of sound. The company leans heavily on Defense Department work and pitches itself as a path to deterrence.

Shinkei

Not all alumni ventures look like defense contracts or engines. Shinkei wants to reinvent how people kill and eat fish. The company built a robot called Poseidon that uses computer vision to identify fish and kill them more humanely. The goal is to preserve freshness while reducing the suffering fish experience when they are left to suffocate. Shinkei provides the technology to commercial fishermen and sells the fish under the label “Seremoni Grade.”.

  1. I don’t even get how an IPO makes people millionaires overnight when it takes years for rockets to launch. But Elon always finds a way, so whatever. Also Starship stuff feels like it’s always “testing” forever.

  2. Wait, alumni startups? I thought SpaceX was already part of NASA or like basically government. So are these former employees getting government contracts now through the IPO? I’m probably mixing things up but it sounds like a monopoly on space lol.

  3. This is why I can’t take “engineering” seriously anymore. They go public, and suddenly it’s millionaire/billionaire math. Meanwhile regular people are stuck paying for internet and watching launches on TV. Starship was supposed to be the big thing years ago too…
