Rain threatens Indy 500 start and Coca-Cola 600

Indy 500 – Racing fans are set for a tense Memorial Day Weekend as rain chances hover over both the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca-Cola 600, with possible delays beginning at Indianapolis between mid-afternoon and later uncertainty at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The weekend

When the calendar flips to Memorial Day Weekend, the roar is supposed to start on time. But on Sunday, the sky over two marquee tracks is fighting back.

The NASCAR world has been hit by the sudden loss of driver Kyle Busch. and tributes poured in quickly across social media. Still. for fans tuning in to motorsport’s biggest days. the focus is also turning to the weather—because both the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Charlotte Motor Speedway are forecasting unsettled conditions that could force schedule changes.

The 110th running of the Indianapolis 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway gets underway at 12:45 p.m. ET with a 45% chance of rain. The National Weather Service forecast suggests rain is likely to hold off until around 2 p.m. ET, when the forecast calls for partly sunny skies and temperatures nearing a high of 80 degrees. Current projections push the last round of rain away from Indianapolis between 4 and 6 p.m. ET, creating a window where conditions could improve enough for the race to run cleanly.

The Indy 500, however, has been bitten by weather before. The 2024 edition was delayed four hours by thunderstorms before the race finally went green.

Conditions don’t look steadier 600 miles south. The 67th Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway is expected to see cloudy skies and a slight chance of spotty showers. Temperatures are forecast to stay in the 70s early and then drop into the 60s as night progresses—comfortable if the rain stays away—but the Charlotte area faces no less than a 60% chance of rain at any point during the scheduled race. according to the hourly forecast.

Charlotte’s weather problems have already shown up earlier this weekend, with its Truck Series race pushed back multiple times due to rain.

The race format may add pressure once the clock runs later. The Coca-Cola 600 is a night race, and once darkness falls—and moisture starts to creep in—track conditions can deteriorate quickly.

Katherine Legge is watching both forecasts closely as she attempts Double duty Sunday. She is scheduled to race at Indianapolis before heading to Concord, North Carolina, for the 600. Any significant rain delay at the Indy 500 could disrupt her tight timeline between the two events. A delay at Charlotte. though. might not be as damaging—if it comes with the right timing. it could actually give her more breathing room.

With both events tied to the same unpredictable threat—rain lingering, then moving—Memorial Day’s biggest stage is set for a different kind of competition: managing the clock, not just the track.

  1. So they’re like saying rain won’t hit until 2pm but then it could still come back between 4 and 6?? That’s literally my whole workday 😩. I hope they just start and ignore the weather.

  2. Kyle Busch death gets mentioned and then it’s immediately weather talk, which is kinda wild. Like I get it, but I feel like NASCAR should cancel everything until everyone’s done grieving. Also if the rain delays Indy again, does that mean the race time shifts into the Kyle Busch memorial too or what?

  3. Isn’t it crazy the Indy 500 is at 12:45 and they’re already forecasting rain 45% like that’s normal lol. I remember last year it started late because of “thunderstorms” but then it still went fine, so I’m not buying the doom. Charlotte having 60% for showers… sounds like it’ll be wet for the whole Coca-Cola 600 unless they bring out the same magic dry air machines they use on golf courses.
