NORMAN — Win or the season is over. That’s the line Oklahoma softball is walking as Game 2 of the Norman Super Regional unfolds, with Mississippi State one win away from reaching the Women’s College World Series for the first time.
The Sooners already dropped the opener, losing to Mississippi State 11-9 on Friday. Now the stakes tighten fast: Oklahoma is at risk of ending a streak of nine consecutive WCWS appearances.
Through two innings in Game 2, offense has been limited. Xiane Romero struck out looking, Kinley Keller grounded out, and Kiarra Sells struck out looking. In the frame, Isabela Emerling singled and Abby Dayton walked, but Sydney Barker struck out to end the inning.
Oklahoma also ran into trouble early. Morgan Stiles flew out to right center, Tatum Silva lined out to first base, and Nadia Barbary grounded out in the first.
The second inning added more pressure. Kai Minor grounded out, Ella Parker walked, and Kendall Wells struck out swinging before interfering with the Mississippi State catcher’s throw to second.
On the mound, Oklahoma is starting lefty Audrey Lowry in Game 2. Lowry allowed four earned runs in 1 ⅓ innings in Friday’s loss, returning to a game where one more slip could turn into an abrupt end.
Here’s the rest of Oklahoma’s starting lineup for Game 2:
CF: Kai Minor
RF: Ella Parker
C: Kendall Wells
DP: Kasidi Pickering
SS: Gabbie Garcia
1B: Isabela Emerling
LF: Abby Dayton
3B: Sydney Barker
2B: Ailana Agbayani
The game is set for Saturday, May 23, with first pitch at noon CT at Love’s Field in Norman. The matchup continues a best-of-three series played May 21-23 or May 22-24, and these super regionals determine which teams advance to the Women’s College World Series at Devon Park in Oklahoma City.
Oklahoma and Mississippi State are locked into the familiar rhythm of a series where every inning matters. Mississippi State’s path is clear: one more win brings the Bulldogs to the WCWS for the first time. For Oklahoma, the equation is harsher—another loss ends the season and threatens that nine-year run of consecutive appearances.
As the second game plays out, the rest of the schedule remains defined in the background. Game 3, if necessary, is set for Sunday, May 24, with time to be determined.
