Three children and a teacher were killed in a shooting at an elementary school in Bend, Oregon, on Thursday. Officials stated that a bystander confronted and fatally shot the 16-year-old suspected shooter.

Steve Cook, superintendent of the Bend-La Pine School District, addressed the incident.

We are heartbroken. We are horrified. This is the kind of thing you hear about in other places and pray that it never happens here. And it has happened here.

Classes and after-school activities were canceled across the district following the attack. The children who were killed were 5, 8 and 11 years old, according to officials, and a teacher was also killed. Their names have not yet been released. Another child—a 7-year-old—and another teacher were critically injured.

Authorities reported that the 16-year-old suspect was a resident of Bend. It remains unclear if he attended the school previously or knew anyone there, and his motivations are still under investigation.

Bend Police Department Chief Mike Krantz stated that the gunman entered the building by firing at locked doors. At 12:59 p.m., a 911 caller reported their vehicle was being shot at. Two minutes later, the school went into lockdown, and officers arrived on the scene a minute after that.

Oregon Governor Tina Kotek addressed the bystander who intervened during a press conference.

And to the community member who heroically intervened to stop further loss of life, your actions carry a heavy emotional burden. And I just want you to know that my thoughts are with you as well.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the identity of the community member, noting it is unclear whether the individual was a parent or an armed passerby.
