Oklahoma softball booted from WCWS for first time
Oklahoma softball – No. 3-seeded Oklahoma was eliminated by unseeded Mississippi State in Game 3 of the super regionals on Sunday, May 24, snapping a nine-straight Women’s College World Series streak. The setback ends what had been a near-permanent presence in Oklahoma City under
For years, Oklahoma softball has felt like it comes with a reservation in Oklahoma City—an almost automatic line on the schedule under Patty Gasso.
That certainty ended in Game 3 of the NCAA super regionals, when No. 3-seeded Oklahoma was booted by unseeded Mississippi State. The loss on Sunday, May 24, wasn’t quiet. Mississippi State jumped out to a 4-0 lead against the Sooners while Oklahoma struggled against Delainey Everett. and the Bulldogs closed out the upset with a 6-0 win.
The defeat carries a specific weight for the program. Oklahoma entered the run with nine straight Women’s College World Series appearances. the kind of streak that has made the WCWS feel like a home fixture rather than an earned destination. The last time Oklahoma didn’t reach the tournament was in 2015. when it was bounced by Alabama in three games in the super regionals.
Now, with the Sooners eliminated in the super regional round, the program is facing something it has rarely had to endure: a season with no ride to Oklahoma City. It is only the second time in the past 15 seasons that Oklahoma has failed to advance out of the super regional round.
Coach Patty Gasso’s record deepens the shock. Since taking over Oklahoma softball in 1995. the veteran coach has made 18 appearances in the Women’s College World Series and has won eight championships. including four straight from 2021 to 2024. Still. even Gasso’s long tenure includes missed trips: this is the 14th time she has missed the WCWS. and it is the first time Oklahoma has sat out since 2015.
Mississippi State’s path to Norman shows how rare this kind of swing is. After competing in the Eugene regional—where the Bulldogs outlasted Oregon and Saint Mary’s—Mississippi State traveled to Norman to take on the Sooners. The Bulldogs then completed a run that left Oklahoma unable to extend its streak when it mattered most.
The sequence of facts makes one thing plain: Oklahoma’s absence isn’t a minor detour—it’s a break in a pattern that has defined the program. For nearly a decade. the Sooners haven’t missed the Women’s College World Series since the 2015 loss to Alabama in three games. and within Gasso’s tenure. Oklahoma has missed the WCWS only 14 times. including twice since 2011.
By the time the final outs went quiet on May 24, that math had changed. For Oklahoma, the title of “usual suspect” for Oklahoma City has slipped—at least for now—into a new chapter written by Mississippi State’s 6-0 win and a super regional upset that ended the streak with one decisive game.

Wait so OU got kicked out?? I thought they always automatically make it to OKC lol.
I only saw the score summary but 4-0 and then 6-0?? That’s brutal. Patty Gasso usually can’t be stopped so this feels kinda shocking, but also… softball is weird every year.
Isn’t this the year they said they were unbeatable? Like one bad weekend and suddenly it’s over. Also I read somewhere that Mississippi State always plays better when they’re “unseeded” or whatever, idk if that’s true. Feels like OU choked in Game 3 though.
Patty Gasso missing OKC since 2015 is crazy to me. I get the streak snapping part but it’s not like Oklahoma isn’t stacked, so maybe the pitching just fell apart or they got unlucky. Mississippi State jumping out 4-0 and then closing 6-0 sounds like something that happens when the other team catches fire early. Either way I’m not ready to believe OU is “done” or anything, that’s just one regional round.
