No. 18 Busch nod drives Indy 500 tribute

Kyle Busch’s family confirmed he died at 41 after pneumonia progressed into sepsis. With Busch never making the Indy 500 despite two attempts, Dale Coyne Racing will run the No. 18 car at the 110th Indy 500 using the same number font tied to Busch’s years at J

When Kyle Busch died Thursday at 41, it didn’t just take a NASCAR star—it also left a racing dream unfinished. Busch never got to make his way to the Indianapolis 500. He tried twice to qualify, but both attempts fell apart.

On Sunday, though, the sport he loved will put him on the track anyway, in a way fans can recognize instantly.

Dale Coyne Racing will run its No. 18 car in the 110th Indianapolis 500 with the same number font Busch used during his years at Joe Gibbs Racing. The gesture is a deliberate nod to the two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion who died after complications from pneumonia progressed into sepsis. as his family shared.

Fox Sports broadcaster and veteran IndyCar driver Townsend Bell came up with the idea, with Fox Sports and Joe Gibbs Racing helping make it happen, the team said. It’s the kind of tribute that travels farther than a single weekend—because the number on the car carries its own history.

For years at JGR, the No. 18 was synonymous with Busch. He won his first Cup Series championship in 2015 while driving that car. Later, Busch moved to Richard Childress Racing, where he drove the No. 8 until his death.

Busch had long wanted to compete at Indianapolis. In a recent “Actions Detrimental” podcast with Denny Hamlin. he said he had deals in place on two separate occasions. only to see both fall through. The Indy 500 stayed on the list of few things in racing he never managed to check off—and Sunday’s entry is an acknowledgment that even when the date doesn’t arrive. the connection can still be honored.

The IndyCar and NASCAR crossover matters here. too. because it shows how Busch’s brand of competition moved beyond one series. The sequence of tributes planned across Memorial Day weekend makes the story feel less like symbolism and more like a collective pause: Busch’s name is being carried. track by track. with details that reflect the numbers he lived with.

Memorial Day weekend tributes extend beyond Indianapolis. Indianapolis Motor Speedway will light the pylon on lap 18 in Busch’s honor Sunday. At Charlotte Motor Speedway, Richard Childress Racing will suspend the use of the No. 8, running the No. 33 instead.

RCR said it would reserve the No. 8 until Busch’s 11-year-old son Brexton is ready to go NASCAR racing. The No. 8 is already painted on the infield grass at Charlotte entering turn 1.

Taken together, the decisions are specific and personal: the No. 18 number font at Indy, the lap 18 lighting at the Speedway, and the No. 8 held back for Brexton all point back to the same truth—Busch’s absence is being measured not just in headlines. but in the way the sport is choosing to remember him.
