Mitchell demands shots, stops, and free throws to survive

Mitchell strategy – Facing elimination after dropping Game 3 to the New York Knicks, Donovan Mitchell laid out what the Cleveland Cavaliers must do to avoid a series sweep. Cleveland now trails 3-0 and must find a spark in Game 4 on May 25 at 8 p.m. ET.

New York didn’t just win Game 3 on Saturday night—Cleveland felt the ground shift beneath it. Now the Cavaliers are staring at the kind of deficit that ends seasons quickly, with the series sitting at 3-0 against them.

Donovan Mitchell and the Cleveland Cavaliers still have one more chance to slow the Knicks’ momentum. Mitchell is entering the ninth season of his NBA career and the fourth with the Cavaliers. and he finally reached an important milestone in his ninth attempt—making the Conference Finals for the first time in his career. It’s Cleveland’s first trip to the East Finals since 2018. a run that began with Mitchell’s team beating the Toronto Raptors and the Detroit Pistons in the first two rounds.

But the story has turned brutal in the Conference Finals. Cleveland suffered a historic fourth-quarter collapse in Game 1. and in Games 2 and 3 the offense couldn’t keep up with New York. After Saturday night’s loss. Mitchell was asked what it would take to beat a team Cleveland hasn’t managed to get past through three tries.

“You’ve had three tries and you haven’t done it yet. What’s it going to take to beat this team?” a reporter asked.

Mitchell didn’t give a vague answer. “Let’s start with making some shots, getting some stops, and making some free throws,” he said.

While that message landed right after Game 3, it also sounded like an instruction set for survival. Cleveland knows what’s at stake: trailing 3-0 means one more loss ends their season. They’ll try to delay that reality when they host the Knicks in Game 4.

Game 4 is set for May 25 at 8 p.m. ET.

Even in the defeat, Cleveland’s core had production to point to. Five players scored in double digits for the Cavaliers in the Game 3 loss, including Mitchell. He led the offense with 23 points, adding four assists, three steals, and one rebound. Evan Mobley posted 24 points, six rebounds, two assists, and a block. James Harden followed with 19 points and five assists, while Jarrett Allen contributed 17 points and seven rebounds.

Still. the scoreboard isn’t forgiving. and the Cavaliers are trying to turn individual efforts into team results against a Knicks side that has already taken three straight. If Cleveland’s postseason journey began with a breakthrough after years of second-round exits. their next step now has a simpler requirement: execute the fundamentals Mitchell spelled out—make shots. get stops. and convert at the free-throw line—before it’s too late.
