The results are close in one of the most consequential races of the 2026 primary season.
Abdul El-Sayed holds a slight lead over Rep. Haley Stevens in Michigan’s Aug. 4 Democratic Senate primary. El-Sayed, a Detroit-based public health official, takes a populist approach compared to Stevens’ traditional liberal mindset.
The combative race, which was seen as a turning point in the Democratic party, comes as Democrats desperately want to maintain Senate seats amid a narrow GOP majority.
Here’s the latest on how El-Sayed and Stevens performed, as well as some of Michigan’s Aug. 4 primary results for key House, Senate and governor races, according to the Associated Press and CNN.
Michigan House primary results
District 1
- Republican: Incumbent Rep. Jack Bergman (74.3% of votes) defeated Matthew DenOtter (13.1% of votes) with an estimated 99% of votes counted.
- Democrat: Callie Barr (58.4% of votes) defeated Kyle Blomquist (35.7% of votes) with an estimated 99% of votes counted.
District 2
- Republican: Incumbent Rep. John Moolenaar won the race uncontested.
- Democrat: This race has yet to be called. Ben Ambrose (44.4% of votes) leads Jamie Hill (42.3% of votes) with an estimated 99% of votes counted.
District 3
- Republican: Terri DeBoer (78.6% of votes) defeated Ryan Cushman (21.4% of votes) with an estimated 99% of votes counted.
- Democrat: Incumbent Rep. Hillary Scholten won the race uncontested.
District 4
- Republican: Incumbent Rep. Bill Huizenga (85% of votes) defeated Philip Tanis (15% of votes) with an estimated 97% of votes counted.
- Democrat: Sean McCann (65.7% of votes) defeated Diop Harris (34.3% of votes) with an estimated 98% of votes counted.
District 7
- Republican: Incumbent Rep. Tom Barrett won the race uncontested.
- Democrat: William Lawrence (43.7% of votes) defeated Bridget Brink (28.8% of votes) with an estimated 99% of votes counted.
District 8
- Republican: This race has yet to be called. Thomas Smith (50.4% of votes) leads Amir Hassan (33.2% of votes) with an estimated 99% of votes counted.
- Democrat: Incumbent Rep. Kristen McDonald Rivet won the race uncontested.
District 10
- Republican: Michael Bouchard (72.2% of votes) defeated Justin Kirk (18.1% of votes) with an estimated 98% of votes counted.
- Democrat: Christina Bertrand Hines (47% of votes) defeated Eric Chung (29.7% of votes) with an estimated 98% of votes counted.
District 11
- Republican: Ethan Baker won the race uncontested.
- Democrat: Jeremy Moss (49.5% of votes) defeated Aisha Farooqi (49.5% of votes) with an estimated 97% of votes counted.
District 12
- Republican: James Hooper won the race uncontested.
- Democrat: Incumbent Rep. Rashida Tlaib (74.3% of votes) defeated Shanelle Jackson (16.3% of votes) with an estimated 86% of votes counted.
District 13
- Republican: T.P. Nykoriak won the race uncontested.
- Democrat: This race has not yet been called. Donavan McKinney (51.6% of votes) leads Incumbent Rep. Shri Thanedar (48.4% of votes) with an estimated 73% of votes counted.
Michigan Senate primary results
- Republican: Mike Rogers won the race uncontested.
- Democrat: This race is not yet called. Adbul El-Sayed (48.6% of votes) leads Rep. Haley Stevens (47.4% of votes) with 95% of votes counted.
Michigan governor primary results
Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is term-limited, opening the seat in the state’s top office.
- Republican: John James (50.1% of votes) defeated Perry Johnson (35.2% of votes) with an estimated 99% of votes counted.
- Democrat: Jocelyn Benson (83.1% of votes) defeated Chris Swanson (16.9% of votes) with an estimated 94% of votes counted.
