macOS 27 Golden Gate drops Intel Macs for good

Apple’s macOS 27 “Golden Gate,” unveiled at WWDC 2026, runs only on Apple silicon. Intel Macs are capped to security updates through 2029, while Siri’s most powerful AI features require an M3 chip and 12GB of unified memory.

At WWDC 2026, Apple didn’t just unveil macOS 27 “Golden Gate.” It quietly drew a line under the Intel era—one many Mac owners have been watching for years, and now finally crossed.

Intel Macs are officially out of the macOS 27 Golden Gate rollout. Apple says these machines will still receive security updates through 2029, but major software upgrades for Intel hardware are effectively finished.

For anyone deciding whether to upgrade hardware—or whether it’s worth waiting—this is the practical takeaway: if you’re on Apple silicon, you’re likely already in the clear. If you’re on Intel, the clock is now measured in security patches, not new features.

macOS 27 Golden Gate is supported on the following Mac models:

MacBook Neo (2026)
MacBook Air with Apple silicon (2020 and later)
MacBook Pro with Apple silicon (2020 and later)
Mac mini with Apple silicon (2020 and later)
iMac with Apple silicon (2021 and later)
Mac Studio (2022 and later)
Mac Pro with Apple silicon (2023)

That compatibility list looks generous on its face. But Siri AI’s “full” capabilities come with stricter hardware requirements.

To unlock Siri AI’s most powerful features in macOS 27, Apple says you need at least an M3 chip and 12GB of unified memory. That requirement knocks out the MacBook Neo and any Mac model limited to 8GB of unified memory—even if it otherwise supports macOS 27 Golden Gate.

There’s also a clear regional twist. Mac users in the EU will get Siri AI from day one. iPhone and iPad users in the same region, however, will have to wait, as Apple’s ongoing Digital Markets Act dispute plays out.

macOS 27 Golden Gate is set to arrive this fall. An English beta of Siri AI is expected sometime after.

  1. Wait I thought Siri was server side… so why does it need an M3 and 12GB? I’m confused. Also MacBook Neo being knocked out seems weird.

  2. Security updates still means it’s fine forever, right? Like if it’s safe, who cares about “major upgrades”. I guess people just want faster AI or whatever.

  3. EU gets Siri AI day one but iPhone/iPad won’t?? That sounds backwards. Apple really making this a region thing over some lawsuit. Also “macOS 27 Golden Gate” sounds like a boat name not a software update.
