Lightning fears and bug threats loom for UFC White House card

Lightning and – UFC Freedom 250 at the White House is less than a week away, but Dana White says lightning—and potentially bugs like gnats—could be the deciding factors in whether the show runs smoothly on Sunday, June 14.
On a July 4 speech last year. President Donald Trump tossed out a simple idea—holding a UFC event at the White House in the middle of 2026 to mark the upcoming 250th anniversary of American independence. Months of planning followed. and now the one-off card is about to become real: UFC Freedom 250 is set to take place on Sunday. June 14. on the White House grounds in Washington. D.C.
The date itself has carry-over meaning. The event was originally planned for July 4. but it was moved to June 14 to line up with Flag Day in the U.S. as well as Trump’s 80th birthday. What’s been promised since then is a seven-fight pay-per-view card—featuring two title fights—run out on presidential grounds. with organizers building the cage structure and a lighting rig for an outdoor setup in a place where security and logistics are never background noise.
Still, as Sunday night approaches, the questions aren’t about who’s fighting—they’re about what the environment might do.
The biggest variables. according to the UFC president. are elements that can’t be trained through camp or fixed with a last-minute adjustment. Dana White has repeatedly said he isn’t a fan of outdoor combat sports because there’s “lack of control over the elements.” For this event. he’s making an exception—friendship with Trump part of the push—but he still sounded the alarm on what could disrupt the show.
Heat and humidity are one concern. The forecast for the D.C. area on Sunday afternoon calls for over 30 degrees Celsius, with a small chance of rain throughout the evening and night. White’s stance is that neither excessive heat nor rain would be enough to cancel the fights.
Lightning, though, is where the plan changes fast. White said in a recent interview with Rich Kleiman on the podcast Boardroom Talks: “The only thing that can really crush us is lightning. So if lightning happens that night. we’ll wait out the lightning until it goes away and we’ll do the show a little bit later. or we’ll see how that plays out.”.
Bugs are the other potential hazard White keeps thinking about—especially on the East Coast. He said the problem is not theoretical. During an invitation to the Rose Garden in mid-May for a dinner. White described the conditions in blunt terms: “The amount of gnats that were flying around … I’m like. ‘Holy (expletive).’ As soon as I got on the plane. I called my head of production (Craig Borsari) and said. ‘Yeah. let me tell you about the gnat situation.’”.
On the same podcast. Kleiman referenced a notorious moment from the 2007 ALDS between the New York Yankees and Cleveland Indians. when a swarm of midges bothered Joba Chamberlain and other players and officials during the eighth inning. White tied that kind of scenario directly to what could go wrong in a cage setting where safety matters and where fighters—already competing in a dangerous sport—can’t simply step out of the way.
White also pointed to the practical realities of an outdoor arena built for television and spectacle. He talked about “that lighting grid. ” “the claw that we’re gonna have (above and around the Octagon). ” and “the amount of power in the lights. ” warning that those setups can attract insects. In his words: “Moths, gnats, and God knows what else. Fighters trying to deal with that. … These are all the things I think about. In your mouth. up your nose while you’re trying to fight. so I was telling (Borsari). ‘Maybe we put fans in because gnats have a hard time with the wind.’ These are all the little details that we have to think about. That’s why I don’t like fighting outside. Ever.”.
Between White’s concern about lightning and his memories of gnats, the event’s stakes are obvious: for UFC Freedom 250, the sport’s danger is one side of the equation. The weather—and what it brings—could determine the other.
UFC Freedom 250 is packed with star power too. Although the White House lawn is being positioned as the centerpiece of the night, the card itself will feature 14 of the UFC’s top fighters.
Ilia Topuria, the lightweight champion, will face interim lightweight titleholder Justin Gaethje in a five-round main event. The UFC introduced an interim title in January when Gaethje defeated Paddy Pimblett at UFC 324, while Topuria took a personal leave of absence.
In the other title fight. former light-heavyweight and middleweight champion Alex Pereira will aim to become the first fighter in UFC history to win a title in a third weight class when he faces Ciryl Gane in an interim heavyweight title fight. Reigning heavyweight champ Tom Aspinall is still recovering from serious eye injuries sustained at UFC 321 in October. when he was poked in both eyes by Gane in the first round of their title fight.
There’s also Canadian representation in the American capital. Montreal native and Sportsnet contributor Aiemann Zahabi meets former bantamweight champion Sean O’Malley in a pivotal 135-pound contest where the winner could position themselves for a title shot.
The full bout order for UFC Freedom 250:
— Ilia Topuria vs. Justin Gaethje (lightweight title unification bout)
— Alex Pereira vs. Ciryl Gane (for interim heavyweight title)
— Sean O’Malley vs. Aiemann Zahabi
— Derrick Lewis vs. Josh Hokit
— Mauricio Ruffy vs. Michael Chandler
— Bo Nickal vs. Kyle Daukaus
— Diego Lopes vs. Steve Garcia
Even the presentation is planned with the White House setting in mind. All fighters will wear custom fight kits with a red. white and blue colour palette for all athletes. and each kit will include a bespoke badge featuring the official White House logo. The Octagon Girls will also get custom fits when they present the round signs before and during the fights. using a style similar to what was done at the Sphere for 2024’s Noche UFC card.
Fight week is already moving. Sportsnet’s Aaron Bronsteter, Arden Zwelling and former UFC fighter Diana Belbita are on site in Washington, D.C., covering the week and preparing interviews and other segments.
Here’s what’s on the calendar:

June 13: Later the same day. all UFC Freedom 250 fighters will be at The Ellipse. a park on the south side of the White House wall. posing on the scale for fans and facing off one last time before Sunday’s fights. It will stream live on Sportsnet+ beginning at approximately 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT.
UFC Freedom 250, Sunday, June 14: Unlike most UFC weekends, there is no preliminary card. The entire seven-fight card is set to begin at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT and is available to order through Sportsnet+. The event also stands out for its timing—on Sunday night rather than the typical Saturday slot.
Now, with days to go, the fight lineup is locked in. The remaining uncertainty sits outside the cage: whether lightning stays away. and whether the kind of insects White described from a Rose Garden dinner stay out of the spotlight as fighters step into a uniquely difficult setting on the White House lawn.

If lightning hits the cage it’s game over lol.
Bugs/gnats like they’re gonna throw a fit? I mean it’s DC in June, that’s not exactly breaking news. Just spray the area and let the fighters go.
So they moved it from July 4 because of Trump’s birthday and Flag Day? That’s wild. I thought Flag Day was like a whole different thing, not like weather scheduling? Either way, lightning seems like a legit reason to cancel, not gnats.
Dana White always talking about weather like it’s a storyline. Lightning fears and bugs could decide the whole card?? Meanwhile people are gonna be packed in there anyway. Also, I swear I read somewhere it was on the 14th like years ago, so is this really for the 250th anniversary or just marketing again? Kinda seems like they’re blaming nature instead of the logistics.
