Sahra Noor, the older sister of Representative Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., skipped a scheduled book tour stop at the University of Minnesota Rochester on Thursday night due to a family emergency. The cancellation occurred amid fallout from a federal raid on the congresswoman’s home.
Noor was scheduled to discuss her memoir, Salt in the Snow: A Somali Immigrant Story, at the Intercultural Student Center. When reporters arrived, the space was empty, and Garden Party Books later stated the event was canceled due to a Noor family emergency.
Noor, who lives in Nairobi, Kenya, and came to the United States as a refugee in the 1990s alongside Omar and other family members, was reportedly subpoenaed in relation to an immigration investigation into her sister. Federal agents with Homeland Security Investigations executed a search warrant on Omar’s Washington, D.C., home early Monday morning.

The investigation stems from a probe into whether Omar or her late father, Nur Mohamed, fraudulently filled out her citizenship paperwork decades ago. The inquiry could potentially lead to the congresswoman’s denaturalization.
Omar has described the search as an outrageous abuse of power.
