Gene Schwam, Veteran Hollywood Publicist for Entertainment Icons, Dies at 96

Gene Schwam, a veteran Hollywood publicist who represented entertainment legends including Elvis Presley, Judy Garland, and Julie Andrews, has died at 96 in Los Angeles.

Gene Schwam, the veteran Hollywood publicist who worked with entertainment luminaries such as Elvis Presley, Judy Garland, Julie Andrews, Barbara Eden, and Blake Edwards, has died at the age of 96. Schwam passed away Friday in Los Angeles following a brief illness.

In 1954, while making $35 a week alongside fellow publicist Stanley Cowan, Schwam decided to leave and establish his own agency. He partnered with Adeline Hanson to open Hanson & Schwam Public Relations in 1955. The firm initially represented restaurants and musicians before expanding rapidly into the broader entertainment industry, handling publicity for the Cocoanut Grove nightclub and representing notable talents like Nancy Wilson and Lou Rawls.

Throughout his extensive career, Schwam also worked with Lenny Bruce, Cyd Charisse, and Gene Barry. His professional partnerships with Andrews and Eden played a central role in his career, and he maintained a close friendship with Edwards, who based the publicist character in his 1981 film S.O.B. on Schwam.

Beyond his public relations career, Schwam created Humanity 101, an initiative of Arizona State University’s Project Humanities that promotes compassion, empathy, forgiveness, integrity, kindness, respect, and self-reflection. In an April 2021 conversation reflecting on his career, he emphasized that success in the personal service business relies heavily on referrals rather than cold outreach, advising that professionals should begin with the end goal in mind and work backward.

Schwam is survived by his wife, Myrna Schwam; his daughter, Stephanie Schwam Adams; his stepchildren, Adam London, Greg London, and Linda London; and four grandchildren.
