Frank Sanchez Targets Richard Torrez Jr Comeback

Frank Sanchez insists Saturday’s IBF eliminator against Richard Torrez Jr. is his chance to reverse how people viewed him after the Agit Kabayel loss, putting him back on a path toward being the first Cuban heavyweight champion.

Frank Sanchez walked into Thursday’s press conference with a simple message—and a sharper urgency than it sounded like on the surface.

Saturday’s IBF eliminator against Richard Torrez Jr. the Cuban heavyweight said. is the moment he can prove he still belongs among the division’s serious contenders. The setback to Agit Kabayel changed the way people look at him. Sanchez admitted. but he’s not pretending the goal has moved. Becoming the first Cuban heavyweight champion remains his benchmark.

“I just want to get back to where I belong,” Sanchez said. “Get back to my spot and be the first Cuban heavyweight champion.”

The stakes are clear in the structure of the contest. The winner of Saturday’s fight will move into position as a future IBF mandatory challenger. Even with that pathway sitting there, Sanchez kept his focus narrow—Torrez first, everything else only after.

His road back started with a response to the Kabayel defeat. Sanchez returned by landing a stoppage win over Ramon Olivas Echeverria, giving himself a win to build on. Still, the matchup has him facing an opponent who arrives with momentum and an edge on paper.

Torrez Jr. comes in unbeaten, carrying a 14-0 record with 12 knockouts. He’s also been active at a level that gives Sanchez reason to respect the challenge: Torrez’s recent wins include victories over Guido Vianello and Tomas Salek.

Sanchez didn’t shy away from that. When asked about Torrez Jr., he praised the opponent’s skill while insisting the matchup plays into his strengths.

“He’s a great boxer,” Sanchez said about Torrez Jr. “But I’m the more technical boxer, and I will show that on Saturday.”

The uncomfortable reality for Sanchez is that confidence doesn’t swing punches. His momentum stalled over the last year. and he believes this is the fight that can put him back toward the heavyweight title picture. On Saturday. he’ll have to translate that belief into results—right where the optics of the Kabayel loss are still lingering.

One thing is also clear: even with the IBF eliminator’s mandatory-challenger path waiting for the winner. Sanchez seems determined to treat this like it’s about more than positioning. For him, it’s about reclaiming a place. Getting back to where he thinks he belongs. And doing it by beating the unbeaten man in front of him—Richard Torrez Jr.
