Ex-pitcher says Brewers haunt Cubs’ momentum

Cubs struggles – After explosive starts that included two 10-game winning streaks and a 15-game run at Wrigley Field, the Chicago Cubs have stumbled hard—dropping 11 of their last 13 and losing seven straight—prompting former Major League pitcher Dontrelle Willis to say the Br

The Cubs began the season like a team ready to hang with the National League elite, stacking momentum before many clubs had even found their footing.

They’ve already posted two 10-game winning streaks in a season that is just 52 games old, and they reeled off 15 straight wins at Wrigley Field earlier in the year. For a team that looked capable of taking down anyone, the fall from that height has come fast.

Chicago is now third in the National League Central. The division-leading Milwaukee Brewers are up by three games, and the second-place St. Louis Cardinals sit one game behind the Cubs.

After their second 10-game winning streak ended—against the Texas Rangers—the Cubs have gone in reverse quickly. They’ve lost 11 of their last 13 games, and the skid has tightened into seven consecutive losses. Saturday’s result was another jolt: a 3-0 decision to the Houston Astros.

Before the Cubs started their series with Houston, they were swept at home by the Brewers.

Fox pregame analyst and former Major League pitcher Dontrelle Willis believes that early dominance has been interrupted by something more psychological than mechanical. “I think no matter how well they play. the Brew Crew is still at the back of their minds. ” Willis said on the Fox pregame show. He added. “The Cubs are supposed to play defense and hit home runs. and they are not doing either of those things.”.

That belief lands at an ugly moment for a lineup that was supposed to change the Cubs’ punch. Chicago is expecting centerfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong and former Astro and Red Sox Alex Bregman to have a huge impact on the team’s attack. Through this point, though, both have been disappointing.

Crow-Armstrong is hitting .228 with 6 home runs. Bregman is hitting .250 with 4 home runs.

In the span between those season-defining streaks and now. the Cubs have shown how quickly elite-level form can slip away—especially in a division where the Brewers are already pulling clear. and where the Cubs’ next challenge isn’t just finding wins. but finding the edge that helped them build a lead in the first place.
