Ex-FTX Chief Operating Officer Slams Netflix Series as Laughable

Former FTX executives have criticized a new Netflix dramatic series centered on Sam Bankman-Fried, dismissing its framing as a toxic romance and highlighting stark contrasts with the reality of the collapsed crypto exchange.

When the cryptocurrency exchange FTX collapsed in 2022, it left behind billions in losses for investors and permanently altered public perception of digital currencies. Investigations quickly revealed that founder Sam Bankman-Fried had illegally transferred billions from the exchange to support his hedge fund, Alameda Research, which was run by his on-and-off partner and co-worker Caroline Ellison. That dramatic downfall has now been adapted into a new Netflix series titled “The Altruists,” billed as a toxic romance inspired by real-world fraud.

The dramatization has drawn sharp criticism from individuals who held front-row seats to the company’s implosion. Constance Wang, the former chief operating officer of FTX, said that attempting to portray the events through the lens of a love story is laughable. Wang, who is depicted in the show by actress Madison Hu, stated that Bankman-Fried was consumed by his work and that romance appeared secondary to him. In the workplace, employees largely remained unaware of any relationship between Bankman-Fried and Ellison because he appeared constantly occupied with professional tasks.

While the series portrays its central figures as aggressive and forward-facing revolutionaries, former colleagues recall a much quieter, more mundane corporate culture. Former marketing manager Quinn Li remarked that the trailer overemphasizes emotional drama while failing to capture the actual personalities involved in the operation. Wang noted that the real parties attended by insiders typically involved board games and chess rather than the salacious lifestyle depicted in subsequent reports. As federal law does not make allowances for defendants who claim they intend to do good later, Bankman-Fried is currently serving a 25-year sentence for fraud and money laundering.

The catastrophic end arrived in November 2022, when a sudden rush of customer withdrawals triggered by external market pressures exposed an $8 billion hole in the company’s accounts. Wang recalled that management initially urged calm and instructed staff to reassure anxious traders that the system was secure. Only after withdrawals were frozen did Bankman-Fried admit in a war room meeting that the exchange lacked sufficient funds to meet customer demands. The collapse caused widespread devastation, leaving approximately nine million customers and investors facing severe financial losses.

Following the company’s bankruptcy, recovery efforts by the bankruptcy team have clawed back roughly $16.5 billion to repay customer balances at November 2022 valuation levels. Wang was investigated by the Justice Department for about a year but was never charged with any wrongdoing or called to testify at trial. The period of fallout took a heavy personal toll, leading to struggles with depression before she eventually returned to the crypto sector by co-founding a new trading platform in 2025. Netflix did not respond to requests for comment regarding the series, leaving former employees uncertain about how their real-life experiences will be portrayed on screen.
