Elon Musk becomes first trillionaire after SpaceX IPO

By the time SpaceX’s IPO arrived, Elon Musk’s fortune had already been hovering near the $800 billion mark. Then the numbers changed fast.
Musk’s net worth has now passed the trillion-dollar mark after SpaceX’s IPO. driven in part by the value of his 4.8 billion shares in SpaceX. Those holdings—along with wealth from other companies such as Tesla—are what pushed him into a rare bracket: a 13-figure net worth. according to a share-price benchmark tied to his fortune.
The key reference point sits at $138. SpaceX shares opened at $150 and have remained well above that level. For Musk, that matters in a way people rarely see—because the wealth is largely “on paper,” tied to market pricing rather than cash in hand.
SpaceX’s own framing of its business mission adds another layer to the moment. Earlier this year. SpaceX combined its rocket operations with AI and social media platforms. and in its S-1 filing it said its goal is to “build the systems and technologies necessary to make life multiplanetary. to understand the true nature of the universe. and to extend the light of consciousness to the stars.” The company also claims the combination is uniquely positioned to deliver on the concept of “orbital AI compute. ” by putting AI data center servers in space via reusable rockets.
All of that ambition is racing alongside a stark financial comparison. Musk is now worth, on paper, roughly as much as the next four wealthiest people in the world combined. Forbes places Larry Page, Sergey Brin, Jeff Bezos, and Larry Ellison together at just over $1 trillion. Bezos and Ellison each have less than a fourth of Musk’s net worth.
It also marks a historic pace. Musk passed the $1 trillion mark 110 years after John D. Rockefeller became the world’s first billionaire in 1916.
The milestone lands in a moment where the technology companies Musk built—and the vision SpaceX describes—are already pulling in the same direction: rockets. AI. and the far-off idea of computing that doesn’t have to stay on Earth. For now. the world’s wealth ranking has simply caught up with the market value—at least on a screen—showing what happens when a single company’s IPO remaps the scale of a fortune overnight.

So basically he’s rich rich now… but it’s all on paper right?
Wait $138 is the benchmark?? Like why that number lol. SpaceX IPO goes brr and suddenly trillionaire. Meanwhile my rent is going brr too.
I don’t get how he can be a trillionaire if he can’t just cash it out. Also the article said “orbital AI compute” which sounds like sci-fi marketing to me. Like putting servers in space is cool but I doubt it matters to average people.
This is why I hate the whole “on paper” thing, because it’s still real power. They said SpaceX shares opened at $150 and stayed above $138, so that’s why his fortune jumped, but does that mean he got paid immediately? Also comparing to Rockefeller like ok sure, but where’s the part about actual workers getting rich? Feels like the tech bros just win again.
