Microsoft is expanding Edge Copilot to use open tabs for answers, plus new study, podcast, writing, and mobile screen-sharing features.
Microsoft’s latest Edge Copilot update is designed to make everyday browsing feel less like jumping between windows and more like having one AI “understand” what you’re already looking at.
The update adds a capability for Copilot to gather information from across your open tabs.. When you start a conversation with Copilot. you can ask questions about what’s on those pages. compare products you’re viewing. and request summaries of articles you currently have open.. The premise is straightforward: instead of relying only on what the AI can infer from the web in general. it can reference the material already in your browser.
Microsoft says you’ll be able to control this experience by selecting which kinds of tab-based experiences Copilot should use, or skipping the ones you don’t want. That choice matters because it affects how broad the AI’s “view” of your activity becomes during a chat.
The company also announced that it’s retiring Copilot Mode. a previous Edge feature that could similarly draw from your tabs.. Copilot Mode wasn’t just about answering questions; it included more agentic behavior such as the ability to book a reservation on your behalf.. Microsoft says it has since folded those agentic capabilities into another tool inside Edge called “Browse with Copilot.”
For users, the change is significant not because the features disappear, but because they move into a different workflow.. By consolidating the agent-like parts into “Browse with Copilot. ” Microsoft is shaping Edge around a set of AI tools that act on what you’re doing while keeping the conversational interface consistent.
Beyond tab awareness, Microsoft is also bringing additional AI functionality to Edge.. A new “Study and Learn” mode is set to take the article you’re reading and convert it into a study session. including interactive quiz-style components.. The goal is to turn static reading into something more guided. without requiring you to switch platforms or manually create prompts.
There’s also a tab-to-audio feature: an AI-powered tool that turns your tabs into AI-driven podcasts. The description positions it as similar to NotebookLM-style experiences, where multiple sources can be repackaged into an audio format designed for listening rather than scanning.
Microsoft is additionally adding an AI writing assistant that appears when you start typing on a webpage. While details of how it behaves aren’t expanded further here, the intent is clear: provide assistance inline as you compose, keeping the support close to where the writing is happening.
Privacy and relevance are addressed in a separate capability.. Microsoft says you can grant Copilot permission to access your browsing history to help deliver more “relevant. high-quality answers.” In other words. the system isn’t only looking at what’s open right now; with permission. it can incorporate longer-term patterns to better match the kind of guidance you’re seeking.
The update also includes “long-term memory” for Copilot in Edge on both desktop and mobile.. Microsoft says it will tailor responses based on what you’ve discussed in prior conversations. suggesting the AI will learn from the context of your usage rather than treating each chat as completely independent.
On the interface side, Microsoft is redesigning what you see when you open a new tab.. The refreshed page is described as combining chat. search. and web navigation in one place. and it adds “Journeys. ” a feature that uses AI to organize browsing history into categories you can revisit.. Rather than letting past browsing become a tangle of links. the aim is to make it easier to return to earlier threads.
Meanwhile, Edge’s mobile app is getting a hands-on collaboration feature.. An update will let users share their screen with Copilot and talk through questions about what’s visible.. Microsoft says Copilot will show “clear visual cues” when active. so people can tell when it’s taking an action. helping. listening. or viewing.
Taken together. these changes point to a broader shift in how the browser operates: Copilot is moving from being a separate assistant into an environment-aware tool that can interpret your open pages. reshape information into new formats. and respond with more continuity over time.. For Microsoft. the bet is that the most useful AI in a browser is the kind that understands your current workflow and can keep up with what you’re already doing. not just what you type next.
