Eagles’ A.J. Brown deal inches closer after June 2

With June 2 just days away, the Eagles can trade A.J. Brown and spread his dead-money charge over two years—pushing expectations toward a Patriots landing. The key question now isn’t whether the talks are real, but whether anyone can still jump in before the t

June 1 is eight days away. In NFL timing, that’s practically next week.

For A.J. Brown, it may also be the final stretch before the calendar flips to June 2, when the Eagles can trade Brown and spread the dead-money charge over two years. Most people around the league believe the swap is simply a matter of time—and most believe the destination is the Patriots.

That expectation has only sharpened because Patriots safety Kevin Byard and receiver Romeo Doubs recently spoke openly about the arrival of Brown. as if it were already happening. It’s the kind of talk that can feel reckless when a trade still isn’t official. But it also feeds the broader belief that the real work may already be done.

One scenario fits the facts as they’re being discussed: the deal could be unofficially agreed to—terms worked out. with both sides keeping their mouths shut until Brown passes a physical and both teams communicate the terms of the transaction to the league office. In that version of events. everything stays quiet not because nothing is happening. but because everyone knows how quickly the wrong move can ruin a deal.

The reference point is the Maxx Crosby fiasco from March. The lesson taken from that episode was blunt: don’t let the cart get in front of the horse. Say nothing until the trade is official.

There’s also the question of whether another team could still swoop in with a better offer. If the Patriots and Eagles have unofficially worked out a deal—and if both sides intend to honor a transaction that remains unofficial until it becomes official—then the window for someone else to change the outcome may already be closing. The thinking is simple: once terms are agreed and process is moving in-house. late bids don’t have the same leverage.

Still, names keep getting floated. Some have suggested the Rams could make a run at Brown. But that path is described as already blocked—because the Rams decided not to proceed in March based on available medical information. and because they allowed $24 million in 2026 compensation for receiver Davante Adams to become fully guaranteed. The logic attached to that move is that if the Rams had gone forward on that earlier approach. they would have traded Adams.

For a different contender to emerge, the door would likely have to open in a way that changes priorities elsewhere. Some are pointing to the Chiefs, especially if they’re suddenly uneasy about whether Rashee Rice can be trusted after his recent probation violation.

For now, the strongest signals still point in one direction: Brown becoming a Patriot as soon as June 2 arrives—before anyone else can realistically change what already seems to be set in motion.

  1. Patriots fans are gonna be insufferable if this is real. I don’t even follow the Eagles but I saw Byard and Romeo Doubs talking and that’s basically confirmation right?

  2. I think the whole “wait till June 2” thing is just cap talk. Like teams always say it’s next week and then it drags out forever. If Eagles are spreading dead money over two years, that sounds like they’re already done with AJ Brown mentally.

  3. Maxx Crosby fiasco?? So now they’re all scared of saying the wrong thing? That’s kinda wild. Also why do they need June 2 at all, couldn’t they trade whenever? I just feel like if the Patriots think it’s happening already then it’s happening, like the league can’t stop it or something.
