Diana’s twin nieces turn Cannes red carpet into tribute

Lady Amelia and Lady Eliza Spencer stepped onto the Cannes Film Festival red carpet on May 21 wearing Zuhair Murad looks for the premiere of “Coward,” a public appearance that also lands amid major family headlines and the long shadow of Princess Diana’s Paris

The first cameras caught Lady Amelia and Lady Eliza Spencer as they arrived for Cannes on May 21. stepping into the spotlight with a confidence that looked less like a borrowed moment and more like theirs to take. On the French Riviera. the twins—both 33—walked the red carpet for the premiere of the Belgian film “Coward. ” dressed in floor-length gowns designed by Zuhair Murad.

Amelia wore a blush-colored, beaded dress with a high-neck halter style from the fashion house’s fall 2026 collection. Eliza. in a darker contrast. chose a black mermaid gown with a shoulder-baring high neckline and beaded embroidery. a piece from Zuhair Murad’s pre-fall 2026 collection. The twin look wasn’t identical. but it carried the same signature: evening drama. carefully shaped lines. and the kind of detail that makes photographers stop scrolling.

Their appearance also arrives with fresh momentum in their family. These have been among the more higher-profile events the twins have attended since their father. Charles Spencer. the ninth Earl Spencer. married archaeologist Cat Jarman on May 15. Spencer has been married three times previously, including to Amelia and Eliza’s mother, Victoria Aitken.

The Earl Spencer’s life story is busy on its own terms. He has five other children from his marriages. including Eliza and Amelia’s older sister. Lady Kitty Spencer. and younger brother. Louis Spencer. Eliza and Amelia are cousins to Princess Diana’s sons with King Charles III—Prince William and Prince Harry—placing their current public moments within a wider royal family network that still feels intensely connected to Diana’s legacy.

Princess Diana died at 36 after a car crash in Paris. She would have turned 65 in July. In the early morning hours of Aug. 31. 1997. a car carrying Princess Diana and her boyfriend. Egyptian filmmaker Dodi Al-Fayed. along with her bodyguard. Trevor Rees-Jones. crashed into another vehicle and a pillar inside Paris’ Pont de l’Alma tunnel. Fayed and Henri Paul. the driver—who was found to be intoxicated at the time of the accident—died at the scene. Diana died from her injuries several hours later in a hospital.

There is a blunt symmetry to the way these dates land: years after Diana’s death in Paris. her memory keeps reappearing in public life. including through a wax figure unveiled in the Grevin Museum in Paris. Decades later. the pageantry around her family still draws attention in places far from the tunnel—like Cannes—where the Spencer twins have now stepped into the frame themselves.

  1. I didn’t even realize they were twins, thought it was just one person doing the whole princess vibe. Also “Coward”?? not sure if that’s a movie or a shade at the family drama.

  2. Wait so the article says they’re cousins to William and Harry… but then it’s like connected to Diana still? Isn’t that just normal royal stuff? Either way Cannes is always weirdly fancy for stuff like this, like who asked for a tribute on a movie premiere.

  3. This reads like one of those ‘mourning but make it fashion’ situations. Diana died in Paris and now they show up in France again, like the universe won’t let it go. And why did they mention the wax figure, that just makes it feel creepy. Also the dates are confusing, like is it May 21 or Aug 31, I can’t keep it straight.
