The timing felt brutal for the Arizona Diamondbacks: one night after Lourdes Gurriel Jr. left Friday night’s game against the Colorado Rockies in the sixth inning. the team confirmed he won’t be available for the stretch ahead. Gurriel was placed on the 10-day injured list on Saturday with a left hamstring strain.
Gurriel’s trouble began while he was sliding in an attempt to make a catch. After he exited the game, he underwent imaging tests that confirmed the hamstring injury. Arizona will now determine Gurriel’s recovery timeline based on how the strain responds.
This comes at a difficult moment for the veteran’s season. Gurriel, 32, returned earlier in 2026 after recovering from a torn right ACL sustained in September 2025. But at the plate, his start has been far from the mark. Through 25 games, he is hitting .228/.284/.304 with one home run and 11 RBIs. His wRC+ sits in a .588–.66 range, placing him well below league-average production. Even his exit velocity has dipped, sitting at 87.5 mph this year after higher figures in 2024 and 2025.
For Arizona, the immediate relief has been defensive steadiness. Gurriel has played 24 of his 25 games in left field and has committed no errors in 2026. His .989 fielding percentage for left fielders ranks above the league-average mark.
To fill the opening, the Diamondbacks selected the contract of top prospect Tommy Troy. The organization’s No. 4 prospect per MLB Pipeline and the 12th overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft out of Stanford has yet to make his MLB debut. In Triple-A Reno this season, Troy is batting .307/.397/.449 with 28 RBIs across 44 games, posting an .846 OPS.
Troy’s progress has been consistent over multiple levels. In 2025 at Triple-A, he produced a .295/.381/.429 line. Since 2023. he has racked up 268 minor league games and has been moving more into outfield work from his original infield role—logging 219 innings in the outfield this season compared to 162 at second base. That flexibility has become a key part of his profile. He offers defensive options in both left and center field and has gone error-free in center field over seven games.
Arizona, which is trying to stay above .500 while managing roster adjustments, is expected to review how Troy fits into the outfield rotation. Gurriel’s status, meanwhile, will hinge on the extent of the left hamstring strain and how quickly he can get back on track.

Hamstring injuries are the worst. Bet he comes back and instantly looks slow tho.
So they shelve him on IL after one game? That’s crazy fast, I feel like they could’ve just rested him. Also .228 sounds like he’s washed…
Wait, the article says he slid to make a catch, so was it like… a teammate collision or the ground? I swear hamstrings always show up after someone makes one good play. Tommy Troy better not mess up left field if they’re gonna play him right away.
I don’t get it. He came back from a torn ACL earlier and now a hamstring is doing him in again? Like maybe he never fully healed? And why is the rookie even on the roster if he hasn’t debuted yet, seems rushed, but also maybe they need him because the offense is dead (.588 wRC+???).
