Monday afternoon in Mount Olive, the sound of gunfire reached people long before they understood what it meant.
Covington County Sheriff Joel Houston confirmed that a Covington County deputy was shot near Greer’s CashSaver at 406 Main Street. He said the deputy is suffering from life-threatening injuries, describing that the deputy was shot above the vest, under the arm.
The response was immediate and visible. A witness told WDAM 7 she heard shots while she was at home. She said there was an ambulance on scene and police tape “everywhere.” Another viewer photo captured footage of a person walking toward a wooded area near a home shortly after the shooting.
As investigators worked the scene, law enforcement activity expanded beyond local departments. Houston said state and federal agencies are assisting in the search for a possible suspect.
Lamar County Sheriff Danny Rigel said deputies are on their way with the SRT Team and K-9 units. The Jones County Sheriff’s Department said it has deputies, investigators, and narcotics agents at the scene in Mount Olive to help with the manhunt.
Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves posted a message on Facebook asking for the public’s prayers for the deputy as law enforcement continues the investigation.
WDAM 7 reached out to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation for information about the incident. The shooting remains under investigation, and the manhunt is ongoing.

So sad, hope they catch whoever did it.
I saw this on FB and was like wait what, the shots heard from home?? That’s crazy. Prayers for the deputy but also why is there a manhunt already, like don’t they know anything yet?
Above the vest under the arm?? That detail makes me think it was close range or something, idk. And why federal agencies if it’s just around a CashSaver? Seems like they jumped straight to the biggest resources, maybe they already had a lead or the suspect is a known person from before.
Mount Olive always got something going on… like last year I swear there was another thing near 406 Main. Also “wooded area” doesn’t help because everyone in that area is like 2 seconds from the trees. I’m not even sure if it was a real suspect or one of those false leads, but the police tape everywhere is never a good sign.
