Deportation imminent after cat killing conviction in Torrevieja

The man convicted over the brutal killing of his ex-partner’s cat last month has been arrested in Torrevieja and is expected to be deported from Spain within hours, following the court order enforcing his immediate expulsion from the country. The National Police detained the man on Monday afternoon after judicial authorities ordered that the sentence against him be carried out without delay. As part of the ruling, he will be expelled to his country of origin and banned from returning to Spain for five years.
The case caused widespread public outrage after details emerged of the violent death of the animal, which belonged to the man’s former partner. According to the investigation, the cat was killed in a public street in what authorities considered an act of retaliation designed to cause emotional suffering to the victim. The man had been investigated for animal abuse involving cruelty, as well as gender violence in its vicarious form. The court ultimately considered the seriousness of the facts proven and imposed expulsion from Spanish
territory as part of the sentence. The incident has once again highlighted the disturbing role that pets can play in cases of domestic and gender-based violence. Animal welfare groups and victim support experts have long warned that abusers may target animals as a means of intimidation, punishment or psychological control, particularly when the animal has a close emotional bond with the victim. This form of abuse, often described as vicarious violence through animals, is increasingly being recognised as a serious warning sign within abusive relationships.
By harming or threatening a pet, perpetrators can inflict deep emotional trauma while extending control over their victims even after a relationship has ended. Following Monday’s arrest, the authorities are now proceeding with the execution of the sentence. The deportation is expected to take place in the coming hours, bringing the judicial process to a close with the convicted man removed from national territory and prohibited from re-entering Spain for a period of five years. Police sources confirmed that the arrest was carried out in
compliance with the court’s resolution, which ordered the immediate enforcement of the expulsion order due to the gravity of the offence.
