In the 11th inning, Spencer Steer didn’t just reach base — he slid hard into the moment and turned it into the deciding run.

Steer scored the winning run with a headfirst slide on Blake Dunn’s one-hopper to shortstop, and the Cincinnati Reds outlasted the St. Louis Cardinals 7-6 on Saturday to split their day-night doubleheader.

Elly De La Cruz set the early tone for Cincinnati with a three-run homer, and Nathaniel Lowe added a two-run shot as the Reds built a 5-1 lead in the fifth.

Then the Cardinals found their footing. St. Louis scored twice in the ninth to get within one, tying it 6-all on a two-out RBI single by Jordan Walker. The swing that flipped the game started in the sixth, when Walker hit a three-run homer.

The closing stretch kept tightening. In the 11th, Steer was the automatic runner. He moved from second to third on a sacrifice bunt by P.J. Higgins. After a walk to Dane Myers put runners at the corners, Dunn sent a one-hopper up the middle.

With the infield playing in, shortstop Masyn Winn made a lunging stop to his left and fired a spinning throw to the plate. Catcher Yohel Pozo scooped the ball on a short hop, but he couldn’t get his tag down in time to get Steer. A replay review upheld the safe call.

Dunn was credited with an RBI on a fielder’s choice. He also prevented the go-ahead run from scoring in the top of the inning with a sliding catch in shallow right field.

The Reds held on after the review decision, sealing the late escape they needed after St. Louis pulled the game into extra innings.

  1. Wait Steer slid and then they had a replay? Baseball reviews always take forever. I just want to know if the ump was right or not.

  2. So basically it’s like the Reds won because the shortstop made a fancy throw and the catcher dropped the ball? I’m not even sure what play decided it but I’m glad they split the doubleheader.

  3. Elly hit a three-run homer and then suddenly it’s all tied?? That Jordan Walker RBI single in the ninth is wild. Also why are they saying “one-hopper” like I’m supposed to know what that means, but yeah Cincinnati held on.
