DC man faces 69 charges after bus stop shooting

By the time the bus stopped near 16th Street NW and Missouri Avenue NW, the night was already on edge.

On Jan. 22 at about 5:40 p.m., an 18-year-old D.C. man—Anthony Del Cid-Morales—was accused by prosecutors of getting off the bus and pulling out a handgun. then firing into a crowd of more than 15 people at the bus stop. The shots hit five people. Prosecutors said all five survived with minor injuries.

Del Cid-Morales has now been indicted on 69 charges connected to the shooting. The charges include assault with intent to kill while armed. possession of a firearm during a crime of violence. aggravated assault while armed and related counts. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro said the indictment also contains multiple enhancements for crimes of violence against Metro Transit passengers.

Prosecutors described a sequence that began on the bus. They said the shooting happened after Del Cid-Morales allegedly sexually assaulted a girl on a bus. When the bus reached the stop in Northwest D.C. the juvenile victim and a group of friends got off through the rear doors. while Del Cid-Morales got off through the front. prosecutors said.

As he exited, prosecutors said he pulled out a handgun, racked the slide, and fired into the crowd.

The victims were not all caught up in the same way. Prosecutors said three of the people hit by gunfire had been with the girl on the bus. Another was waiting at the stop to go home. The fifth was out for an evening walk.

A detention hearing has been scheduled for July 10 in Superior Court before Judge Jason Park. The outcome will determine whether Del Cid-Morales remains jailed as the case moves forward.
