Colts quarterback Daniel Jones will not take part in any 11-on-11 work during this week’s mandatory minicamp, a pause that comes as he continues his return from a torn Achilles.

Jones has already progressed to 7-on-7 drills earlier in the offseason program, and on Tuesday he said he asked to move up to full team work. The team, however, will opt to wait until training camp to move that part of his workload forward.

“I think I’m closer,” Jones said. “I think there’s still work to be done. I wouldn’t say I’m all the way there at this point. I feel good about where I am and where the rehab’s taken me to this point. Still work to do and still got to make some progress, but I feel like I’m in a good spot.”

There’s also no on-field practice for two other Colts this week. Wide receiver Alec Pierce, dealing with an ankle issue, will not practice. Defensive tackle DeForest Buckner, managing a neck problem, also will not practice.

Head coach Shane Steichen said the plan is to get both Pierce and Buckner on the field when the team reports to training camp this summer.

  1. This sounds like another injury excuse like when guys “return” but still can’t do anything. Achilles is no joke though, so I guess whatever. I just don’t want them rushing it.

  2. Wait, Pierce is out too and Buckner is out, so basically nobody is doing anything? I swear these minicamps are just vibes. Also I saw “neck problem” and thought that meant he couldn’t even be on the field at all, like safety wise.

  3. I don’t get why they even have mandatory minicamp if half the starters are sitting. Like what’s the point, right? Daniel Jones skipping 11-on-11 but saying he’s “closer” makes me think they already know training camp is the real start anyway. I remember Achilles injuries and everyone always comes back “almost ready” then it turns into something else later, so… we’ll see. Colts always doing rehab drama.
